Top of pagePurpose of the Program
The objectives of this program are to provide individuals with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to work as photographers and photo imaging practitioners within the industry. On completion you will possess a sound theoretical and practical knowledge base and the skills to use a range of specialised and technical competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate photography and photo imaging services.
The qualification has applications across a range of industry contexts, including Commercial, Advertising, Documentary, Editorial, Institutional and Fine Art photography where you will be required to:
- Interpret photo imaging assignment briefs from a range of clients
- Consult with clients to refine objectives of photo imaging assignments
- Select appropriate technologies and workflows to capture images, including type of camera, image recording media, lighting, post capture processing and outputs
- Work from a studio or in a range of locations
- Employ aesthetic, conceptual, compositional and technical skills to realise photo imaging outcomes
- Utilise a range of traditional, contemporary and emergent technologies in the capture, preparation and distribution of image products.
There is a strong emphasis on the expert use of industry standard software and on professional practices to ensure that as a graduate you are industry ready.

Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Photography and Photo Imaging guarantees entry into this program.
Successful completion of this program guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Arts (Photography) with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

Successful completion of a Certificate IV in Photography and Photo Imaging or equivalent
OR
Industry experience equivalent to a Certificate IV in photography and photo imaging, visual arts or design.
Applicants applying via industry experience must present a supporting folio that demonstrates a variety of lighting and digital post-production techniques.
International English language requirements
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 5.5, with no band less than 5.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

The Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging is recognised by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP). On successful completion of the Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging, graduates are entitled to apply for membership of the AIPP.
The AIPP is Australia's leading membership association for the professional photography community and student membership is available to those studying the Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging at RMIT. This enables students to attend AIPP events and to enter national and international competitions. (Further information regarding AIPP membership categories is available from the website http://www.aipp.com.au).
The Industry Advisory Committee, a group of industry professionals reflecting diverse aspects of photography and photo imaging, provide input and guidance to the development and delivery of this program. Courses within the program are taught by people with extensive industry experience and background.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
