Purpose of the Program

The objectives of this program are to give you the fundamental skills and knowledge to undertake a combination of varied roles within the screen and digital media content production industries. On successful completion of this program you will possess a sound theoretical knowledge base and be able to use a range of specialised, technical or managerial skills to plan, carry out and evaluate the work of yourself and/or a team in the screen and digital media content production industries.

The program is designed to give you a broad understanding of the technical and practical requirements of these industries and to help you gain the valuable skills and knowledge in the key areas of concept development, storytelling, pre-production, production and post-production for digital media productions.

The areas or learning you will undertake include:

  • Camera and multi-camera
  • Social media

The emphasis is on innovative content production, high production values, safe teamwork, professionalism and industry knowledge. This program is designed to prepare you for entry level positions within the screen and digital media content production industries or as independent industry professionals.

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of the following programs guarantees entry into C5412 Diploma of Screen and Media (Content Creation): 

  • C4422 Certificate IV in Screen and Media 

Further Studies:

Successful completion of C5412 Diploma of Screen and Media (Content Creation) guarantees entry into AD017 Associate Degree in Screen and Media Production with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).

Entrance requirements

Domestic applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirement: 

  • PTR/LLN RMIT Minimum requirements and  
  • Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Screen and Media

OR

  • Successful completion of RMIT selection task that identifies some prior experience with screen and media  


(NOTE: Applicants who have successfully completed the Certificate IV in Screen and Media are not required to complete the Selection Task)

Selection task

The selection task requires:

  •  An example of an activity you have undertaken that has depended upon a group of people working in a team. Examples may include team sports, work, a committee membership or participation in activities undertaken in a hobby or special interest group or other (maximum 150 words). 
  •  A description of any task or project you have carried out yourself without being directly supervised by a teacher, employer, family member or mentor (maximum 150 words).
  • A description of a verbal presentation you have given (on any topic) explaining how you prepared and what support material you used (maximum 150 words). 
  • A statement outlining what film or video production hardware and software you have used and why you used that particular hardware and software (maximum 150 words).

AND

 A storyboard exercise: 

  • Create a three-frame story board evoking the word “consequence”. The storyboard should progressively tell a story with a beginning, middle and end, and be driven by your understanding of the word “consequence”. It should also be easily understood by an audience. Imagine each frame as a scene in a film and think along the lines of narrative progression.
  • There is to be no dialogue or captioning included in this exercise - it is purely visual narrative.
  • This is not a test of your drawing skills, stick figures are fine

International applicants must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school qualification) 

AND

Complete International English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 5.5, with no band less than 5.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs in Screen and Media. However, this program is strongly supported by representatives from key industry areas. Course content and assessment is informed by industry through the Industry Advisory Committee. The teachers in the program are all practitioners with current knowledge of trends and work practices.

The industry experience you gain through your study will help you to establish industry links, in a range of areas across the screen and media industry.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
