Purpose of the Program

The Advanced Diploma of Engineering Design enables you to gain knowledge and skills in preparation for employment as a design drafter in the field of Engineering. As an Engineering technician you would support or supplement the work of a professional engineer by preparing drawings and specifications, designing smaller elements of a project, calculating and costing projects, coordinating and  programming tasks, testing materials and developing quality control techniques.

Articulation and pathways

Articulation agreements between RMIT University programs enable you upon graduating from an RMIT University qualification to apply for advanced standing in a higher level qualification.  The statement(s) below provide you with information about articulation agreements with this program.

If you are a graduate of C6093, the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Design and you are applying for the the BH077, Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure)(Honours), you may be able to claim credit for courses you have already completed. For the list of courses for which you may claim exemption and for other details refer to the program guide for BH077, Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure)(Honours).

You may be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs for successfully completing this program upon application to other RMIT University programs. Please check with admissions officer of your program of choice.

Entrance requirements

Current Year 12 prerequisite units  -  Mathematics 1 and 2 (any).

Non-Year 12 applicants are encouraged to apply and may be required to have relevant employment or evidence of experience and/or ability to meet the demands of the program.

External accreditation and industry links

This program is nationally accredited by the Training and Skills Commission, GPO Box 320, Adelaide SA 5001.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will be eligible to apply for membership of Engineers Australia as an Engineering Officer.

The School has a very strong Industry Advisory Committee, which is the main link between the program and industry. Membership includes staff from major Australian civil engineering consulting companies and government instrumentalities. The committee meets twice a year and provides feedback on the currency of our programs, the changing needs of industry and has provided input into the design of the current program.

Three member companies each sponsor a prize to be awarded to outstanding students at the School's annual award ceremony.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
