Purpose of the Program

This qualification provides enabling competencies to design and validate/evaluate electrical equipment and systems and provide technical advice/sales.

The objective of this qualification provides enabling competencies to gain skills and knowledge in electrical design, programmable logic controllers, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, PLC networking and motor control to work in the electrical industry at a technician and para-professional level.

As a graduate of this program you may become responsible for electrical and control support, and administering and upgrading electrical facilities in small, medium or large-sized enterprises. The program is well structured to support you in the installation, maintenance and administration of electrical and automation infrastructure. Your skills will be applicable to a wide range of business, manufacturing and operational occupations where application of knowledge in electrical technology underpins the business operations.

The RMIT program is a blend of practical experience with electrical and control applications built on a strong theoretical foundation.

You will achieve competencies in testing, assembly, installation and maintenance of electrical and automation control. You will gain skills in operating a wide range of automated equipment and systems, manage risk, develop and manage maintenance programs, and provide technical advice.  You will develop knowledge and skills in electrical control systems including programmable logic controllers structured in an industry-based network called Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA); electrical design, motor control, computer programming and software applications.

The program offers a specialised articulation stream if students aspire to undertake a degree.

The qualification is structured to deliver competencies, knowledge and skills required by the nationally accredited Electrotechnology Training Package. It includes a number of core and elective competency units in the major study areas.

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the C4386ENG Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation are guaranteed entry into the C6120 Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology – Electrical.

Further Study

Graduates of the RMIT Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology – Electrical are guaranteed entry into the BH073, Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) (Honours) or the BH075, Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) (Honours) with 1.5 years of credit (144 credit points).

Entrance requirements

Entry to the first year of the Advanced Diploma of Engineering program requires the successful completion of an approved Australian Year 12 (e.g. VCE) or an equivalent program of study; and/or work experience in the relevant industry sector.

If candidates have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (e.g. through prior paid or voluntary work experience), they can be assessed and have these skills and knowledge formally recognised at any point during the program. External accreditation and industry links

This program is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Graduates of the program will be eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia at Engineering Associate level .

The School has a very strong Industry Advisory Committee, which is the main link between the program and industry. Membership includes staff from Electrical Industries based locally. The committee meets twice yearly and provides feedback on the currency of our programs, the changing needs of industry and has input into the design of new programs. It also actively contributes to the School through participation in industrial seminars and visits, marketing events, industry awards and scholarships.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Indigenous Students

We also offer a friendly and supportive environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners can gain support and encouragement from the Ngarara William Centre. Ngarara Willim means ‘gathering place’ in the language of the Wurundjeri, the traditional custodians of the land where RMIT stands. Staff can assist learners to engage and re-engage with education. They offer ongoing guidance with study, living and cultural needs.
