Purpose of the Program
In the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting you will learn the skills and knowledge required to interpret in complex and specialist dialogue and monologue settings that require complex language usage and content. It prepares you to work in domains that include health services, education, business, government, media, international relations, legal services, immigration, conferences and assignments.






Articulation and pathways
Successful completion of this program guarantees entry into the Bachelor of International Studies (Languages) with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.






Entrance requirements
You must have:
- successfully completed the Interpreting Skills for NAATI Certification, Translating Skills for NAATI Certification or Translating and Interpreting Skills for NAATI Certification, OR
- successfully completed a Diploma of Interpreting, Diploma of Translating or equivalent in a related field, OR
- NAATI certification at Certified Provisional Interpreter, Recognised Practicing Interpreter or Certified Translator level or higher, OR
- at least 2 years of documented work experience as an interpreter or a translator.
If you are applying based on work experience you must include a CV that shows your relevant experience (i.e. you have been contracted, employed or engaged in translation or interpreting duties). You must also include referee details in your CV for employment verification. Voluntary or pro bono work will be considered.
International English language requirement
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.






External accreditation and industry links
The program is approved by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd (NAATI). The Advanced Diploma meets the training prerequisite for interpreters who wish to sit the Certified Provisional Interpreter test with NAATI.
NAATI is the body responsible for setting and monitoring the standards for the translating and interpreting profession in Australia. It does this through its system of accreditation. Certain employment conditions, assignments and work roles will require practicing interpreters to have NAATI accreditation.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
