Purpose of the Program

The Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) focusses on the design, presentation and documentation processes for building projects that are responsive to the site, user needs and the environment. This program is vocational in nature and develops skill sets through a variety of learning experiences that directly relate to the practices of building design professionals. Skills are developed to enable you to communicate and work effectively with regulators, authorities and the wide range of consultants associated with the design, construction and servicing of buildings. As a building designer you will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution toward the improvement of the built environment through design solutions that are inclusive of both traditional and emerging community needs.

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of RMIT's Certificate IV in Design guarantees entry into this program.

Graduates of this program are guaranteed an interview for the Bachelor of Architectural Design. Graduates who successfully gain entry into the Bachelor of Architectural Design are granted 144 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1.5 years full-time study).

Successful completion of this program guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) with 144 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1.5 years full-time study). The remaining duration in the Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) is 3 years for the February intake and 2.5 years for the July intake.

Successful completion of this program guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Project Management) with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).

Successful completion of this program guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Property and Valuations) with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).

Successful completion of this program guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management) with 120 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).

If you successfully complete this program you may also wish to continue your studies in the Bachelor of Landscape Architectural Design. If you successfully gain entry into the Bachelor of Landscape Architectural Design you will be granted 60 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 semester of full-time study).

Entrance requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school) qualification. For equivalents to Australian academic entry requirements, see the Country equivalents web page.

Applicants who are not currently studying year 12 are encouraged to submit a personal statement outlining:

  • your reasons for wanting to study this program
  • your intended career path
  • the personal strengths and attributes you will bring to the program
  • details of any related work or voluntary experience

If you do not submit a personal statement you will be considered based on academic achievement only.

International English language requirement

External accreditation and industry links

The Advanced Diploma in Building Design (Architectural) is recognised by the Victorian Building Authority. On successful completion of the program, together with at least two years practical experience supervised by a registered architect, building designer, or builder, graduates can apply to register as a building practitioner and practice as a sole practitioner in Victoria providing they meet the requirements set out in the Building Amendment Regulations 2009 to qualify to register through Building Practitioners Board in the category of Draftsperson, class of Building Design (Architectural).

Our teachers bring to the program extensive industry experience and contact networks, and many are practising professionals. Their experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment.

Industry experience is also represented on the program's Industry Advisory Committee which regularly gives feedback to the School on current trends in the industry, as well as the skills and knowledge needed to gain employment.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals, online databases and resources, and other course related materials, such as DVDs, newspapers and e-books. You can also request items from any library in the world through our document delivery service.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online "Ask a Librarian" service.

All RMIT University students have unlimited access to our specialist quality electronic resources. These include e-books, e-journals and newspapers to make it easier for you to get the information you need, when you need it. Our collections are continually updated to ensure the currency and accuracy of the resources you use.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Canvas

Canvas is accessed through myRMIT. It is the system where you can find all of your course announcements and content, including class notes and resources. Canvas also allows you to participate in course activities, take assessments tasks, view and submit assignments, and receive your grades and feedback. www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit

Google Apps

Store your work in the cloud and collaborate with peers using Google Apps. In addition to Email and Calendar, learning tools include Drive, Sites, Google+ (including Hangouts), Blogger, and Picasa.

myDesktop

Use myDesktop to access your RMIT desktop and applications anywhere, anytime. myDesktop allows you to use a range of software free on your desktop computer or mobile device.
