Purpose of the Program

This program provides the skills and knowledge needed to to work within the financial planning industry as paraplanners, providing a range of financial planning services within a diverse range of product areas, including (but not limited to) insurance, superannuation, managed investments, retirement and estate planning. The program is designed to introduce students to the highly regulated and compliance-driven industry that is financial planning, preparing them for job roles that require specialist skills and a broad understanding of the legislative and regulatory framework in which this work is undertaken.

Possible career outcomes for this qualification include, but are not limited to: paraplanner, associate financial planner/adviser, financial planning practice manager, compliance officer, operations officer for a range of practice areas.

While many graduate students will seek immediate employment in the industry, some will seek to articulate to higher education studies in a finance-related program.

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma of Paraplanning guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Business with a minimum of 96 credit points exemption (equivalent to one year full-time study).

Entrance requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following minimum academic requirements:

Successful completion of Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) or the Australian Senior VCAL Certificate 

OR 

Completion of Post-Secondary studies (Certificate III or above) 

OR

At least 6 months’ work experience in a related field

The development of the program structure and the choice of elective units appropriate to the Financial Services sector were informed by the Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) comprised of representatives of the Financial Services industry and RMIT educators.

Teachers maintain close contact with industry through various professional development activities, and for sessional staff generally they maintain employment or operate their own businesses in a relevant sector.  Doug Gourlay,  Program Manager, regularly engages with extensive networks in the Financial Services area.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services
