Approach to learning and assessment

Each Diploma of Commerce course is delivered in English language, over an academic semester, by staff from RMIT and SCNU in partnership. RMIT will deliver and assess one course per semester in block mode across 4 weeks, comprising lectures and tutorials of up to 20 hours per week. The remaining three courses per semester will be delivered by SCNU staff in the format of one hour lecture and three hours tutorial per week for 17 weeks.

You will be given a list of prescribed texts and recommended readings, which you should consult regularly in order to progress successfully through the program. Your class time will comprise a combination of lectures, tutorials, class discussion and activities.
The following teaching and learning approaches form the basis of your learning experiences:

  • You will be offered a learner centred curriculum that encourages learner engagement and participation providing you with opportunities to communicate in a variety of modes.
  • You will be engaged in projects and authentic tasks that require you to work in multidisciplinary teams on multidisciplinary problems and critically engage with aspects of team development and conflict resolution.
  • You will undertake projects that require you to access a wide variety of knowledge repositories including professional journals, discussion lists and online sources of material.
  • Your learning experiences will contain a broad mix of study modes, including lectures, seminars, workshops and weekly classes, using face-to-face, online and other flexible delivery.

Assessment is designed to give you opportunities to demonstrate your capabilities. You will find that the forms of assessment used may be different for each course, as the assessment you receive must be appropriate to the objectives of each course. The assessment you receive is critical to the success of your degree program, and to your future success in the workplace.  Assessment in this program may include:

  • Examinations: an individual form of assessment where you have the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to explain fundamental principles and solve problems;
  • Assignments and projects: these may be done individually or in groups.  This method may also enable you to demonstrate your ability to work alone or as a member of a team;
  • Reflective journals: where you pause to consider what you have learnt, along with reflecting on the self-development associated with that learning;
  • Assessed tutorials or presentations: a form of in-class test, which may be done individually or as a team:
  • Self-assessment and peer-assessment: for assessment activities such as seminars you will assess yourself or your own group; or assess the work of other groups.  This is part of equipping you to become more independent in your own learning and assessing your own and others’ performance.

Most of the assessment will enable your teacher to provide you with feedback on your strong and weak points.  This will enable you to improve your performance in the future.
