Purpose of the Program

The Diploma of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) is designed to equip students at the GZUCM-RMIT Institute of Life Sciences and Bioengineering with knowledge and skills in relevant disciplines, together with enhanced academic English language proficiency relevant to those disciplines, thus enabling them to articulate seamlessly into Year 2 of the Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) (Honours) program (which will also be offered at GZUCM-RMIT). Graduates from BH069 Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) (Honours) are prepared for a professional career in biomedical engineering with employment opportunities in medical, biomedical, biomechanical, medical equipment, medical laboratory, bioinformatics and other biomedical and health related industries. 

The Diploma program is delivered in full time mode. It consists of eight courses (96 credit points). The program structure is the same or equivalent to that offered in the first year of the Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) (Honours) program. Where there is equivalence, you can seek credit transfer for courses successfully completed as you articulate from the Diploma into Year 2 of the degree program. 

The following courses will provide the biological foundation for your future studies and career in biomedical engineering: Biology of the Cell; Principles of Human Biology; and Human Physiology 2: Body Systems. Engineering Mathematics A, Electrical Engineering Analysis, Engineering Mechanics and Physics 1 focus on foundation engineering knowledge and skills. Introduction to Biomedical Engineering and Design includes components specific to the discipline of biomedical engineering. 

Concurrent studies in English and academic learning skills are embedded into the eight Diploma courses (96 credit points) across the extended semester. 

This program is delivered face-to-face and requires on campus attendance.

Articulation and pathways

Students who successfully complete the Diploma of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) will be eligible to articulate into Year 2 of BH069 Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) (Honours).

Entrance requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.  

The Chinese equivalent for entry to the Diploma program is:

A minimum of 375 in the Gao Kao (National College Entrance Examination, NCEE) - Beijing

The discipline of Biomedical Engineering has extensive links with industry through their Program Advisory Committees (PACs), through research projects and consulting, and through their professional placement program. Employers and industry professionals are members of these Program Advisory Committees, and have contributed both to the initial development and ongoing improvement of this program. Their involvement ensures that your diploma and undergraduate degree program will remain relevant to your needs as a graduate and to the needs of graduate employers. Industry links include senior staff from major biomedical and related companies and relevant government and non-government organisations. 

Students graduating from the degree program BH069 Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) (Honours) at GZUCM-RMIT Institute of Life Science and Bioengineering may be eligible for membership of national and international professional associations.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
