Approach to learning and assessment

The Diploma of Health Science (Pharmaceutical Sciences) aims to inspire, challenge and motivate a sense of curiosity and discovery.

Each of the eight (8) Diploma courses is delivered in English language, over an academic semester, by staff from RMIT and GZUCM in partnership. You will be introduced to a blended learning environment which will prepare you for your subsequent studies in the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Courses will generally involve weekly lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes, practical sessions, oral presentations and on-line activities across the extended semester. Some courses may include intensive block lecture components.

Assessment is designed to give you opportunities to demonstrate your capabilities and to focus your learning. You will find that the forms of assessment may be different for each course as the assessment tasks are aligned with individual course learning outcomes. Assessment tasks might include quizzes, short answer tests, multiple choice questions, assignments, projects, laboratory reports, oral presentations, examinations and tests of practical techniques. Some tasks will be completed individually while others may involve group work. Self-assessment and/or peer assessment may be a feature of some tasks. Most importantly you will be provided with clear specifications regarding the completion of tasks and feedback on your work.

Each of the Diploma courses will comprise foundation disciplinary knowledge, skills and their application. English language development skills will be embedded in each of the Diploma courses. Your prior experience of English language learning may have focused on general reading comprehension, translation, grammatical accuracy and perhaps some writing. However because the Diploma and your subsequent Degree studies will be taught in English, there will be a parallel focus on English for academic communication - writing, listening, speaking and reading. The English language communication skills required for success in each of your courses have been mapped against the relevant course content, skill development, learning activities and assessments. English language staff will work alongside disciplinary experts to assist you to develop requisite English language skills by means of a variety of focussed language learning activities.

  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities
  • complete these activities in real or simulated work contexts or situations.

In this Diploma program, you will undertake the following specific course that focuses on work integrated learning (WIL):

ONPS2571 Introduction to Pharmaceutical Sciences will introduce you to the pharmaceutical industry through interaction with professional scientists. You will simulate the research environment by taking a project from concept through experimental design and action to communicating it in an industry appropriate form of communication.
