Approach to learning and assessment

The Foundation Studies program offers you a variety of ways to learn.  There will be collaborative or group work, you will practice communicating to others orally as well as in writing, you will use technology, develop your problem solving skills and undertake projects and laboratory work related to the various courses in which you enrol.

The program will include lectures, seminars and small group discussions as well as tasks and assignments you will be asked to do with guidance from your teachers.  In some courses there will be laboratory work and in others you will be working on practical projects. Sometimes there will be written tests or reports to be handed in.

The criteria for your assessment will be provided for each course and you will receive information about the ways each course is to be assessed.  You will receive feedback from your teachers regularly on your progress and on areas where you have done well or where you may need to do further study.  This may be given in class to you personally or to your group or in writing or electronically.

The Accelerated Program requires you to complete twelve courses. You will take six courses concurrently and complete the program in two terms. The minimum entry requirements for the Accelerated Program are described below.

Before you enrol each term  you will work with your individual Program Advisor to develop and review your own Learning Plan for the coming term.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods.  You can contact the program coordinator or the Disability Liaision Unit if you would like to find our more

Program transition plan

Effective from 2016 onwards, FS016 Foundation Studies (three trimester) will be closed for new intakes. The last intake of the program will be June 2016. The program will be replaced by a new semester based FS017 Foundation Studies program in February 2017.

If you commence in the June intake 2016, you will have the full duration of the program to complete. If you are unable to successfully complete the program after this time, your course advisor will then explain the options available to allow you to complete. You will have until the end of Semester 2, 2017 to successfully complete your studies and exit with the FS016 Foundation Studies qualification. If successful, you will then progress to your pathway option at RMIT in Semester 1, 2018.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the changes, academic matters or your application to an RMIT pathway program, please direct them to foundationstudies@rmit.edu.au.
