Purpose of the Program

This program is designed to prepare you for a seamless transition into a range of higher education programs. It develops a mix of discipline knowledge, academic English and study skills in a supportive, flexible and learner-centred environment. It aims to assist you to become an independent, critical and lifelong learner and to maximise your potential for success in an Australian university context.

In Foundation Studies you will undertake a range of learning activities and experiences aimed at developing your language skills, stream specific knowledge as well as the study skills required for further study at university level.  Much of this will involve face-to face delivery in the classroom and may include lectures, workshops, studio-based activities, laboratory and group work, as well as practical demonstrations.  In some courses, field trips and site visits will also be undertaken.  Further activities will also be carried out, and resources made available online.  These may include materials such as lecture notes, further reading, case studies, online assessment tasks and discussion boards.

Upon successful completion of the Foundation Studies program you will be guaranteed admission into a diploma, associate degree or degree, depending on the results achieved.  RMIT’s Foundation Studies program is also recognised for entry into degree and diploma programs by other Australian and international universities.

Articulation and pathways

Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program.

Your Foundation Studies program is specially designed to provide you with a pathway into RMIT degree programs. It is very important that you talk to your Program Advisor about the courses you should take so that you will be eligible to apply for admission to the degree or diploma of your choice and ensure you fulfil any specific entry requirements.

Guaranteed admission to an RMIT diploma, associate degree or degree requires satisfactory completion of the Foundation Studies program.  Some RMIT diplomas, associate degree and degrees may also require a minimum GPA or minimum scores in specified pre-requisite courses.   Information concerning entry requirements for associate degrees and degrees and pre-requisite course requirements can be found on the Guaranteed Entry webpage (http://www.rmit.edu.au/internationalcollege/guaranteed-pathways)

Entrance requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 11 (or equivalent senior secondary school qualification) with an average of D or better.

International English language requirements:

You must have a minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 5.5, with no band less than 5.0.

External accreditation and industry links

The RMIT Foundation Studies Program meets Australia’s National Standards for Foundation Programs. That means it is nationally recognized as a program that equips international students with the skills and capabilities to seek entry into higher education programs in Australia. The Program meets the requirements for Foundation Programs that have been registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) for delivery in Australia to overseas students providing an academic preparation for seeking entry to first year undergraduate study or its equivalent.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service. The library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
