Purpose of the Program

As a graduate of the GD035 Graduate Certificate of Occupational Health and Safety program, you will have knowledge and skills required to identify and prevent diverse occupational and environmental health risks and related health problems. The program emphasises design and entrepreneurial approaches to problems and aims to produce professionals that can systematically prevent and control hazards and exposures within workplaces and community environments.  

The program provides an opportunity to develop knowledge and theory of:  

  • the socio-political and organizational context in which work occurs and how this impacts work design and its effects on the workers 
  • the causes of fatalities, injuries and ill health arising from work 
  • recognition of hazards, assessment of their risk and development of suitable controls. 

Many of your assessments will incorporate industry practice by focusing on OHS in work situations.  

The delivery of this program is blended comprising of face-to-face learning supplemented by online learning. 

Graduates of this program are employed in  range of industries, usually in national and international companies  such as: construction; manufacturing; oil and gas, transportation  military, healthcare and agriculture.

Articulation and pathways

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.  

Upon completion of this program, you can continue your studies in the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (GD052) or Master of Occupational Health and Safety (MC282) and receive 48 credit points of exemption (equivalent to 0.5 year full-time study). 

GC035 Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is also an exit award for the Graduate Diploma in  Occupational Health and Safety and Master of Occupational Health and Safety. It is available to students upon successful completion of the four (4) courses (48 credit points) specified in the program structure.

Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related Masters programs at RMIT University subject to each program’s entry requirements.

Entrance requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification), or a minimum of 8 years professional work experience in a related industry.

Applicants with professional experience at a senior level that is less than 8 years may also be considered. 

To have your professional experience considered you must submit with your application a CV and a personal statement detailing your experience.

English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

External accreditation and industry links

Memberships 

All graduates of GC035 will be eligible to apply for membership with the Australian Institute of Health and Safety (AIHS). The AIHS is the body representing occupational health and safety (OHS) professionals and practitioners in Australia. Students can apply to become student members. Industry Links  

The Graduate Certificate of Occupational Health and Safety program and the School of Property Construction and Project Management maintain strong industry links both within Australia and globally. Integrating this industry expertise into the coursework is a key distinguishing aspect of this program. 

The program regularly consults with an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) that consists of high-profile industry representatives. Part of the IAC’s brief is to ensure that that program’s links with industry standards and practices remain current.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library and most areas of the campus.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.
