Purpose of the Program

Information security and assurance forms a vital part of organisational responsibilities. In today’s networked world it is more relevant than ever. From the latest internet worm, to identity theft, the danger is no more than a mouse click away. The Graduate Certificate in Information Security is suited to those interested in the role of a systems administrator and/or a risk analysis consultant. You will learn about wireless LAN security, the Advanced Encryption Standard, RSA, elliptic curve cryptography, smartcards, biometrics and information systems risk management. 

Please note that the  Graduate Certificate in Information Security is an EXIT ONLY award available from the MC159 Master of Applied Science (Information Security and Assurance).

Articulation agreements between RMIT University programs enable you upon graduating from an RMIT University qualification to apply for advanced standing in a higher level qualification.

Entrance requirements

Entry to this program is via MC159 Master of Applied Science (Information Security and Assurance).

Students in the Masters degree who wish to exit the Masters before completion, may be eligible to take out the intermediary award of either GC036 Graduate Certificate in Information Security or GD162 Graduate Diploma in Information Assurance.

External accreditation and industry links

There is currently no external accreditation body in place to accredit this program.
The Information Security and Assurance postgraduate programs have had longstanding industry links. The course Case Studies in Information Security has industry lecturers who talk about their particular expertise. The program has links with, and contributors from, the following organisations: Microsoft Australia, Standards Australia Subcommittee on Information Security Management Systems, Senetas Inc., RMIT Privacy Officer, Witham Labs, Assurance.com.au, and NAB.

The School of Maths and Geosspatial Sciences is formally linked to industry through its Program Advisory Committee (PAC) and through various consulting and research projects undertaken by staff. Members of the PAC provide valuable input into all aspects of the program. They are a major driver for change, particularly with regard to industry trends and future graduate capabilities. Work integrated learning exists throughout thr program through the use of guest lecturers, visits to industry, industry projects and, where possible, student placements in industry.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
