The GC044 Graduate Certificate in Careers Education and Development has been designed for you to develop essential theoretical knowledge and technical skills relevant to the career development sector. You will critically engage with career development practice and be engaged in developing the key concepts and the Professional Standards for Australian Career Development Practitioners that underpin work across career development contexts.
On completion of the program you will be a professional practitioner able to employ CICA professional standards to work ethically with a range of clients in diverse settings such as education, employment services, the corporate world, and private practice. Career Development Practitioners may deliver services in settings such as, but not limited to, schools, higher education (e.g., TAFE and Universities), business organisations, government agencies and private practice in a range of formats including one-to-one, small groups, via the web, large classes and self-help materials.
While acquiring knowledge and skills in traditional areas of practice you will be adopting a design thinking approach to your work with clients/client groups. You will learn about developing frameworks for practice such as career and life design while exploring emerging trends in digital technology and social media. Design thinking is drawn on as a foundation in this program to assist others make decisions about career and life in order to thrive and develop. We draw upon deisgn principles to emphasise the importance of curiosity as a means of creating new ways of thinking. Through this program you will gain insight into the ways design thinking processes can be used to help people get unstuck in their lives and make decisions about exploring career options that are aligned with their aspirations and broader life goals. You will learn how to reframe problems and use design principles and tools effective in getting ‘unstuck' when confronted with challenging career and life decisions. Approaches to case management and narrative careeer construction will complement deisgn thinking, there will be an emphasis in this program on the changing workplace culture nad exploring emerging trends in digital technology and social media will be critical to the success of your work as a careers practitioner. You will gain skills in global contexts for research and life-long learning to enable you to confidently contribute to an evolving industry.
This program is offered primarily online and employs innovative applications of communication technologies to deliver on-line and in-practice learning experiences facilitated by experienced Course Leaders with knowledge of online learning, course requirements and extensive experience in career development. The program also involves a compulsory three day practical face-to-face counselling workshop on a RMIT Campus, and a three (3) day work placement.

You must have:
- Successfully completed an Australian bachelor degree (or overseas equivalent) in any discipline or
- Significant work experience or professional practice in a relevant field.

The Graduate Certificate in Careers Education and Development is endorsed by the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA). On successful completion of the GC044 Graduate Certificate in Careers Education and Development program you are eligible to seek professional registration with CICA and with CICA member organisations such as the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA), Australian Centre for Career Education (ACCE)/(CEAV), National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (NAGCAS) and Careers Advisers Association of NSW (CAA). In line with CICA endorsement processes this program is re-accredited every three years.
The program’s teaching team is recognised within the careers industry both public and private sector as a long standing leader in the provision of professional training in career development and career counselling. Staff have extensive experience in career development and counselling in a variety of industry contexts and are highly experienced in online education. The program is a preferred provider for skilling careers educators by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training (NSW DET) and the Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET).

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you may access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the University Library. Resources include comprehensive collections of books, periodicals and other course related materials, such as DVD's, magazines, slides, films etc. You may also make use of computer laboratories with access to a wide range of desktop publishing software and access the expanding virtual collection of electronic resources and networks, including product data, e-books, electronic journals and newspapers, web based tutorials, online reference and document delivery services etc. all of which are accessible on and off campus 24 hours per day.

The National Borrowing Scheme allows RMIT students living anywhere in Australia to borrow items from participating universities in their home sites.

Courses are also available as PDF files downloadable from myRMIT. The PDFs contain the full curriculum plus other the study resources, however new resources and materials will be added to the site during the semester. Learning materials to aid your study, including access to online study guides, electronic readings, web resources, information about assessment and access to online discussion boards, are also available through myRMIT.
