Approach to learning and assessment

Learning and teaching activities focus on the practical application of  career development professional standards enabling you to apply your knowledge and skills effectively to careers practice in the real world. Course materials and learning activities  provide you with theoretical and pragmatic perspectives of career development practice that you are expected to critique and apply to your current or future practice.

Learning will be predominantly online and includes self directed reading and  reflective activities, negotiated learning, case studies, online tutorials, collaborative group work, webinars and discussions. There are some face-to-face learning experiences and assessments conducted on an RMIT location, specifically a practical Counselling workshop over three days. There is also a three day work placement to be undertaken in a setting of your choice.

Assessments  in the program ask you to reflect on your careers thinking and practice, in light of frameworks, theories and processes suggested by government policy and leading theorists and practitioners. Assessment tasks involve you in “learning by doing” and include a range of activities such as written reflection,  self directed learning and research, design thinking projects, peer and industry review.

The assessment you undertake will be designed so that your Course Leader/lecturer can provide you with ongoing feedback on strengths and areas of improvement in your learning. This approach will enable you to improve on your  performance during the program as well as continue to refine your competencies for your future professional practice.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. Please note that this program’s courses (whether core, option, or university elective courses) may have mandatory in-person attendance or assessment to pass the course. If you are choosing to enrol in a course which has mandatory in-person attendance or assessment, you will need to comply with RMIT vaccination requirements which are applicable during the duration of the course. This RMIT requirement includes being vaccinated against COVID-19 or holding a valid medical exemption.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;
  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning

Any or all aspects of a WIL experience may be real or simulated.

Part of this commitment is to ensure all students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Career Education and Development have the experience of applying their university based learning in a work based setting (real or simulated).

The assessment tasks are developed in consultation with industry participants and are based on issues relevant to today's workplace. In the Graduate Certificate in Career Education and Development the value of WIL is for you to be able to apply the competencies you are acquiring in typical professional situations. This helps you to practice your skills and see how knowledge gained in your studies can be used to do a better job for your clients. You will be learning about the application of competencies to practice through observation and integration of your learning throughout the program. 

The designated WIL courses in this program are:

  • HWSS2195 Narrative Approaches for Career Counselling (3 day workshop simulating workplace)

In HWSS2195 you will be practicing counselling skills and receiving feedback from peers, course leaders and industry professionals.
