Accident investigation is a systematic process whereby safety deficiencies are identified, and adequate recommendations are put in place with an aim to prevent incidents and accidents in transport systems. Accidents are often a consequence of a combination of diverse contributory factors in the context of complex systems. The investigation process requires highly experienced professionals with a good balance of both technical and managerial skills. This is a specialist area which enables professionals working on transport safety related roles across the transport sector to plan, manage and participate in the accident investigation process of air, rail and marine vehicles and associated systems. The skills and competencies provided by this program are relevant to a broad range of professionals across the transport sector, including operators, regulators and infrastructure managers.
In the Graduate Certificate in Transport Safety Investigation program, you will have the opportunity to explore a range of topics which are key to the role of an accident investigator, enabling you to participate in the main phases of an investigation, namely evidence collection, evidence examination and the analysis and elaboration of a final report. The objectives of this program are to give you the fundamental knowledge required to conduct or manage a transport accident investigation. Upon completion of this program you will be able to:
- analyse complex technical and managerial assets in a transport system environment, and develop solutions resorting to multidisciplinary technical and scientific knowledge to ensure problem-free operations;
- find tailor-made solutions from an array of possibilities through systematic problem solving and technological systems design methodologies operating in the transport industry;
- communicate with a wide range of key industry stakeholders in professional and effective manner;
- build, lead and work with teams with trust and respect;
- achieve results in an industry characterised by a high level of regulations and complexity of operational scenarios with fast-paced evolution of associated technologies.
This program will be delivered face-to-face at the Melbourne city campus. Some laboratory activities may require travel to Bundoora campus.

Entrance requirements
- Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline (Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Aviation, Mechanical/Automotive Engineering, Naval Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Human Factors, Safety Sciences, Forensic Sciences, Psychology, Data Science or other cognate area*);
OR
- 3 years of full-time equivalent, relevant work experience in an Accident Investigation and/or Safety Management Systems role, including at least 1 year at manager level;
OR
- 5 years of full-time equivalent relevant work experience in the transport sector (aviation, rail or maritime).
*Cognate areas that may be deemed adequate for entry to this program are other disciplines relevant to the job of Transport Safety Investigators. The suitability of these disciplines will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and may require additional information on the syllabus of the qualifications to be provided.
Applicants who wish to have work experience assessed as part of meeting the entry requirements will need to provide a detailed CV/resume listing previous positions, dates of employment and position responsibilities; a statement from their employer confirming these details (or contact details of employer so RMIT can seek confirmation); and evidence of any relevant professional development undertaken.
International qualifications are assessed for comparability to Australian qualifications according to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
English Language Requirements
International applicants: A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or equivalent.

This program was developed in close collaboration with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) to address a gap concerning the training of highly specialised professionals in the area of Accident Investigation in the aviation, rail and marine sectors. Further to the advisory role during the development of the program structure and corresponding course material, the ATSB also makes available subject matter experts and provide access to other resources during the delivery of the program to contribute to its continuous improvement. The ATSB has a representation in the Industry Advisory Committee and maintains regular research and teaching collaborations. Many of the staff teaching within the program are from local industry or have extensive previous industry experiences and well-developed contact networks, and many are currently engaged in industry funded research projects. These attributes, when integrated into teaching and courseware development, ensure that your learning experience is industry-relevant and work-integrated.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.
