This program has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to enhance your translating and or interpreting skills and qualifications to specialise in the interpreting and or translating in a range of industry contexts.
The delivery mode of this program is fully online.
Top of pageArticulation and pathways
If you already have experience as an accredited translator and/or interpreter you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning. You can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.
Upon completion of this program, you can continue your studies in the GD168 Graduate Diploma in Translating and Interpreting or MC214 Master in Translating and Interpreting receive 48 credit points of exemption into either of these programs.
GC185 Graduate Certificate in Translating and Interpreting is also an exit award for the Graduate Diploma in Translating and Interpreting and Master in Translating and Interpreting. It is available to students upon successful completion of the four (4) courses (48 credit points) specified in the program structure.
Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Translating and Interpreting, you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related Masters programs at RMIT University subject to each program’s entry requirements.

You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in any discipline.
If you have not completed an undergraduate degree, you may still be considered if you have at least five years of relevant work experience in interpreting or translating or in the use of bilingual language skills.
If you wish for your work experience to be considered, you must submit a CV and a personal statement detailing your relevant work experience.
Domestic applicants only: You will be selected competitively for all languages based on your GPA, relevant experience and the results of any selection tasks you are required to complete.

Selection tasks (domestic and international)
You must submit a personal statement outlining:
- the language other than English (LOTE) you would like to study in the program
- if you want to study interpreting or translating?
- if you are applying to study the translation stream, what is your preferred translation directionality (LOTE into English or English into LOTE)? Please note only one direction can be studied in the program. We recommend that you translate into the language in which you are most proficient
Selection tasks (domestic)
To meet the LOTE requirement, you must have completed a qualification equivalent to an AQF level 7 Bachelor degree that was taught and assessed in your nominated LOTE. If you do not meet this requirement you must complete the LOTE test.
Selection tasks (international)
If your Bachelor degree is in English you must complete a LOTE test, which includes reading, writing and translating from your second language into your first language (one of them should be English). The program may also make arrangement for a brief interview if it deems necessary.
If your bachelor degree is in LOTE you must satisfy the English language requirements below.
If you do not have prior qualifications or if your qualifications were completed in languages other than English or not the LOTE you are seeking to study translating and/or interpreting within the program, you must complete a LOTE and English test.
English language requirement
You may meet the English requirements if you have completed an English proficiency test within the last two years, achieving:
- IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
- TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 79 ( with minimum score of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

The Graduate Certificate in Translating and Interpreting has links with the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) http://www.naati.com.au/. NAATI is the national certification authority for translators and interpreters in Australia and provides RMIT (and other Australian tertiary institutes) endorsement in courses in T&I. NAATI also has an international reputation, certifying practitioners in off-shore testing programs in countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Industry Links
The program is endorsed by NAATI, which oversees industry standards in translating and interpreting in Australia. Highly experienced NAATI accredited translators and interpreters are employed to teach into the practical courses in the program.
The program has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) that consists of members from government agencies, service providers, industry representatives and practitioners. Part of the IAC's brief is to ensure that the program's links with industry standards and practice remain current.
The Graduate Certificate in Translating and Interpreting provides a pathway to the MC214 Master in Translating and Interpreting. On completion of the Masters program, you will automatically be eligible to access NAATI relevant certification exam(s) for a translator and/or interpreter.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
