Approach to learning and assessment

In the Graduate Certificate in Translating and Interpreting you will experience a range of teaching and learning approaches that are intended to develop and enhance your knowledge and skills, including seminars, lectures, workshops, tutorials, industry based presentations, problem-based learning, presentations, group-based learning, independent research, reflective learning techniques and case studies. You will also be required to demonstrate a range of verbal, written and internet based approaches of communication.

Our courses ensure that your assessment tasks are authentic and that you will develop the appropriate skills required in a Translating and Interpreting career. Assessment will be aligned to the course learning outcomes and program learning outcomes, and is designed to complement your learning experiences. Your knowledge and skills will be assessed through assessment tasks that may include essay writing, report and project writing, online class presentations and group work, on-line discussion and other on-line activities, case studies, problem solving and analysis, and industry-based assessment.

If you have a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition or are the primary carer of individuals with a disability it is possible to have adjustments arranged and negotiated to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
complete these activities in real work contexts or situations; and in addition:
these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience may be simulated. The specific WIL courses in this program in this program are:

- LANG1221 Ethics and Professional Issues

In LANG1221 Ethics and Professional Issues, part of your assessment will include a simulated job assignment, for which you will receive feedback against industry standards by a practising translator or interpreter.

Program transition plan

From semester 1 2022, GC185 will introduce the following variations to the program structure:

LANG 1220 Theoretical Bases of T&I and LANG1219 Discourse Studies will be changed to an offering every alternate semester
LANG 1237 Interpreting Accrediting Practice 1 is replaced by LANG 1269 Interpreting Certification Practice 1
LANG 1222 Translation Accrediting Practice 1 is replaced by LANG 1268 Translation Certification Practice

Prior enrolments and results in completed courses are not affected by these changes. If you are currently enrolled in GC185 you can choose to finish your degree in the original configuration. You will not incur any extra costs or be required to complete extra credit points as a result of this change in program structure. 

If you are undertaking a reduced load, are on Leave of Absence, have deferred your studies or have not satisfactorily completed some courses, you will not be disadvantaged as a result of this transition process. All individual circumstances will be taken into account and an individualised plan of study will be provided to you in line with University policies and procedures.
