Purpose of the Program

The Graduate Certificate of Design Innovation and Technology is designed as professional development for architecture and design professionals, as well as candidates from other disciplinary backgrounds, such as science, engineering, and business who are seeking to apply and extend their knowledge in the field of design.

The principal objective of the Graduate Certificate of Design Innovation and Technology is to prepare you for the rapidly changing ways in which design can contribute to a more responsive, human-centered, and sustainable world. One of the primary objectives of the program is to speculate about the future of design practice in light of increasing environmental, social, and economic change and to develop design methodologies that integrate the needs of people with the potentials that lie within technological innovation.

As innovation in design practice is positioned at the intersection of several disciplines, students have the opportunity to address issues from a wide variety of professions such as engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, industrial design, service design, graphic design, animation, interaction, lighting, media, and sound design.

The structure of the program allows you to choose a study stream from a range of skill-based optional offerings that address the following areas of design technology and technique:

Spatial Sound
Digital Fabrication
Interactive Technologies
Sustainable Systems

These practical skills are then applied within the Research Studio, which addresses issues relating to the development of technologies and their innovative application. In this studio, you have the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues from a range of disciplinary backgrounds and undertake a self-driven design research project.

The Graduate Certificate of Design Innovation and Technology provides a learning program delivered in a flexible, blended learning mode, utilising both online delivery and access to fabrication workshops, electronics labs, and sound studios. You will also have the opportunity to conduct your studies alongside the Master of Design Innovation and Technology students, sharing skills and knowledge and developing future professional networks.

Graduates may pursue many professional pathways, including work in the fields of architecture, engineering, product design, interior design, exhibition design, interactive design, service design, experience design, sound design, bio-design, and sustainability.

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia, there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs of design innovation and technology.

As design innovation and technology is a specialisation that may be practiced within other disciplines such as architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, industrial design, or acoustic design, for instance, applicants with accredited degrees in these fields may already have, or may pursue, professional registration through those institutes.

Industry Links

The Graduate Certificate of Design Innovation and Technology, and the School of Design, have strong industry links to global leaders in architectural and engineering practice, technology companies and to fabricators, construction and industry bodies. Integrating this international industry expertise into the coursework is a key distinguishing aspect of the program.

The program regularly consults with a Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) that consists of high profile industry representatives. Part of the IAC’s brief is to ensure that the program's links with industry standards and practice remain current.
