Purpose of the Program

The main objective of the Graduate Certificate in Civil Engineering program is to develop knowledge and skills in civil engineering that will enhance your career prospects in the relevant industries. The program aims to provide you with skills to step towards roles such as project leaders, consultants and managers with the knowledge and skills to lead the introduction of new technologies and operating practices in various industries.

The program enhances graduates’ employability and career prospects. Graduates of this program will have gained state of the art knowledge and skills in civil engineering and related technologies, combined with more advanced oral and written communication, teamwork, design, and project management skills. At the completion of the program you will be equipped to further your career aspirations in engineering, operations, management, or consultancy and contribute to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of organisations, and the competitiveness and profitability of business and industry. The Graduate Certificate in Civil Engineering would benefit qualified Engineers who are considering converting to the field of civil engineering.

The program design is informed by the industry trends and the graduate capabilities required of an engineering graduate to successfully engage in a professional capacity with the relevant engineering industries of the 21st century.

As a graduate of the Graduate Certificate in Civil Engineering you will be prepared to work on a range of engineering projects including major projects such as structure analysis and assessment, stability of earth structures, advanced geotechnical design and mining engineering, and surface and underground transport systems. You will also be capable of working on the planning, assessment and upgrade of infrastructure in a wide range of civil engineering applications

This program is primarily delivered in blended mode, which includes a combination of online, self-directed and some face-to-face activities, at the City Campus.

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Civil Engineering are guaranteed entry into the Master of Engineering (Civil Engineering) MC257 program and will receive 48 credit points.

Entrance requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) in Engineering, Science or Technology with a major in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering Systems, Structural Engineering or Mining Engineering.

OR

Applicants without any relevant prior qualification will be considered if they have at least 10 years of relevant industry experience.

International qualifications are assessed for parity to Australian qualifications according to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

English Language Requirements

Local applicants with international qualifications: If your international Bachelor degree was not taught in English you must undertake an IELTS test and achieve a score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent.

Applicants who are applying for postgraduate coursework programs may demonstrate they meet English language proficiency requirements with evidence of two years professional work experience in an occupation requiring English language proficiency.

The Civil Engineering program has strong links with industry through its Industry Advisory Committee and through research and teaching collaborations. Many program teaching staff are from local industry or have extensive previous industry experience and well-developed contact networks, and many are currently engaged in industry-funded research projects. These attributes, when integrated into teaching and courseware development, ensure that your learning experience is industry-relevant.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
