Approach to learning and assessment

The online learning environment has been designed to deliver the best student experience. The key elements of this experience are:

  • Data driven. Performance measurement is captured in real time and presented to you, as well as academic and support staff.
  • Social learning. Tools are provided that enable sharing, organisation and comment on academic content. This provides a personalised experience for you and creates an RMIT Online community of practice.
  • Don't learn the space, learn the content. An initiative web environment that capitalises on your experience and expectations of what’s already on the web.
  • Growing your network. You share within the environment and showcase your growing skills into a portfolio tool as a seamless experience.

Assessments are developed to be authentic to a real-world context and optimised for the online, intensive environment. The program has been enchanced with work-connected learning, so that you can learn a concept one day and start applying it in the workplace the next. You'll also connect with and learn from academic and industry leads just as you would on-campus. While there are online assessments, the program is delivered without the requirement for on-campus attendance and traditional exams, and all lecture material and content is delivered direct to you. A multi-modal approach to online study lets you investigate new ideas through video, audio and hands-on, practical activities and assessments. You’ll connect, interact and engage with expert lecturers and other professionals studying alongside you. 

Assessment in this program may include:

  • Assignments and projects: these may be done individually or in groups.  This method may also enable you to demonstrate your ability to work alone or as a member of a team;
  • Discussion board contributions: Share content, comment on learning material and others' contributions, discuss and explore key concepts, and collaborate with colleagues. Your engagement with the learning material may be assessed, and it is also critical to success in other assessment items and throughout the course;
  • Reflective journals or discussion board posts: where you pause to consider what you have learnt, along with reflecting on the development associated with that learning;
  • A thesis document for your Master's Research Project.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations; and in addition
  • these interactions and the work context provide a distinctive source of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience may be simulated.

Work integrated learning has been incorporated into the following courses in the program:

  • OENG1144 Master's Research Project 1 and OENG1145 Master's Research Project 2

As part of these courses you will work on a capstone project. These projects either are directly connected with industry or simulate the situation of a professional in industry reporting to a supervisor with whom they meet regularly. In the cases where the project is directly connected with industry the industry partner is usually involved in some components of the assessment. Industrial practitioners can become involved in the assessment of some component of the work done by students involved in projects that simulate the situation of an engineer in industry.
