The program uses a variety of face-to-face and online learning and teaching approaches which may include lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars, case studies, problem-based learning, reflective techniques (e.g. blogs, journals), presentations, group-based learning and discussions.
Assessment will include a range of activities such as reports, research projects, assignments, portfolio production, essays, presentations, reflective papers and peer or industry review. Research projects, reports and presentations will be directly related to industry specific needs and may involve making contact with industry practitioners regarding contemporary issues.
Most of the assessment you undertake is ongoing throughout the semester and will be designed so that your lecturer can provide you with formative feedback on strengths and areas for improvement. This approach will enable you to improve on your performance during the course and in subsequent courses, as well as continue to refine capabilities for your future professional practice and learning after graduation.
The program offers an extensive work placement scheme in print, radio, television and online newsrooms. Program staff will assist you to secure a place in a print, radio, television or online newsroom in Melbourne, regional Victoria and/or interstate in major media outlets. A limited number of international placements may be available each year.

COMM2712 Journalism Internship (12cp)
This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience. In this course you will gain practical experience in a professional newsroom or workplace. In addition to your industry placement, you will attend a series of seminars throughout the semester to prepare you for your placement and for the workplace following graduation. Limited international placements may be available.
A WIL agreement including schedule and relevant insurance documentation is required to be completed before commencing each placement (local and international).
*International placements must be registered and processed through RMIT Global Mobility.

Program transition plan
In 2019, the program GD074 Graduate Diploma in Journalism will update its program structure. The existing structure will have its last intake in 2018. All new commencing students after this date will enrol into the newly amended program structure from Semester 1, 2019.
If you are an existing student in GD074, you will be provided with a study plan and a transition map of same or equivalent courses based on the table below. Your academic progress will be considered and reviewed with an academic adviser.
Your study plan will outline:
- Courses you have already completed in GD074
- Courses you are currently enrolled in (results pending) in GD074
- Courses, if any, that you will need to complete in the amended program structure in order to graduate with the award of Graduate Diploma in Journalism
If you are undertaking a reduced load, are on Leave of Absence (LOA), or have deferred studies you will not be disadvantaged by the change in program structure.
You will not incur any extra costs or be required to complete extra credit points as a result of this change in program structure.

Students who have failed the 24cp course Journalism Bootcamp that has been mapped into two new 12cp courses will be required to enrol in the new 12cp courses from Semester 1, 2019. Academic advice will be provided.
