Approach to learning and assessment

The program is designed to be a flexible program of study underpinned by an online student learning management platform that can be accessed anywhere, anytime throughout the semester. The MC199 Master of Business Administration can be undertaken part-time or full-time. There will be opportunities for intensive learning, and students have the opportunity to undertake an international study tour. Lecturers will utilise a range of teaching and learning methodologies. The pedagogical approach is teacher-centred and student-centred which is well suited to the learning styles of recent graduates (see Joyce, B., M. Weil & E. Calhoun [2004] Models of Teaching, 7th ed., Boston: Allyn & Bacon). Particular attention will be paid to presenting content in ways that expose you to the world of work, particularly content that covers the principles and practices related to the management and organization of work and workplaces. Solving business problems with a business design thinking problem- solving approach is incorporated throughout the program. 

A variety of methodologies will be used, including the formal dissemination of content, audio-visual presentations, presentations by industry professionals, simulations and other complimentary approaches, which provide opportunities for you to link the courses' content and skill development requirements with the management and organisation of work and workplaces. 

Through issue-based seminars, case study analyses, simulations, student presentations, student-based topic investigations, and class discussions, you will gain an understanding of the nature of the business constructs as they impact on the regulatory environment, business operations, organisational processes, and performance. 

Problem-based learning: In the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, you may work in a team or individually to conduct research, solve problems, analyse and respond to case studies, prepare or respond to briefs, write original research or case study reports, or participate in managing a company in a computer-based business simulation. This technique is designed to simulate the experiences you will encounter working in business. 

Flexible delivery: The program will incorporate extensive use of online resources with links to core activities, authentic learning content and be applied to real-world contexts, enabling you engage in practical and applied learning and to engaging with your learning journey and submit assessments conveniently. 

Assignments and projects: These may be either research or problem based, and may be undertaken in teams or individually. They will provide you with experience at undertaking research and writing effectively to present your findings and recommendations to a range of audiences.  

The assessment philosophy utilises a range of appropriate measures linked to the program and course outcomes. Assessment tasks include: business plan/reports, academic essays, in-class and online presentations, blogs, group reports, examinations and computer simulations. 

A critical feature of all assessment tasks is the requirement to link rigorous academic literature with your work experience. Reflective practice is encouraged to apply new knowledge and insights towards effective and professional business practices. 

Depending on courses selected, your progress is assessed by a combination of group and individual assignments and examination. Over the duration of your program you will experience a variety of teaching and learning approaches. The approaches used in each course will be appropriate to the learning outcomes and core capabilities they are designed to develop. 

The assessment you must complete is designed to provide you with opportunities to demonstrate the extent to which you have achieved specific learning outcomes in a given area. Methods of assessment will also vary with the learning outcomes of the relevant course that may include case studies, research projects and reports.

Work integrated learning

The Graduate Diploma in Business Administration program is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional practice. The courses listed below will provide you with opportunities to apply your academic skills to a work-based context where you will:

  • be involved in authentic engagement with partner organisations that may be in the form of industry-partnered projects, simulations or placements;
  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations; and
  • be provided with distinctive sources of feedback to assist your learning.

 

The Graduate Diploma in Business Administration includes several courses that are ‘work integrated learning’ (WIL) courses. In these WIL courses, you will engage in activities that integrate theoretical learning with practical application in professional contexts and will engage you in meaningful and consequential learning activities. These courses involve you in interacting with organisations (industry, government and community) through discipline relevant projects and work placements. Many courses in the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration use guest lecturers from industry, government or the community and activities relating to industry as part of the learning experience. Any or all of these aspects of a ‘Work Integrated Learning’ (WIL) experience may be in a simulated workplace environment. 

 

Work integrated learning (WIL) is embedded in two courses in the program:

  • BUSM4535 Design Thinking for Business (12 credit points)
  • BUSM2412 Marketing for Managers (12 credit points)

 

Other courses throughout the program have aspects of industry partnered learning such as guest speakers, case studies, simulations, serious games, and thought leaders.

Program Structure

To graduate you must complete the following: All courses listed may not be available each semester.
 

This program is only available as an exit point from the MC199 Master of Business Administration.

You must complete a total of 96 credit points (e.g. Eight 12 credit point courses) as follows:

  • Five (5) core courses (60 credit points); and
  • Three optional courses (36 credit points).

Optional courses are taken from the Majors, Minors, and Professional Placement and Research List at the end of the program.

Please note, you cannot exit with a major or minor in the Graduate Diploma of Business Administration. If you wish to complete a major/minor, you will need to transfer to the Master of Business Administration.

Program transition plan

PROGRAM CHANGES FROM SEMESTER 1, 2024 

All current students will be transitioned to the new program structure, and previously completed courses, including credit transfer and RPL, will be recognised in the new program structure. This change will not impact the courses you have completed thus far, nor will it extend the duration of your program. 

 

If you successfully complete all the requirements of the current program structure by the end of Semester 3 2023, the changes do not apply to you. 

What is changing? 

Part of your program change is to reduce the core courses in your GD079 Graduate Diploma of Business Administration Program from eight to five, enabling you to select three option courses from within the program. 

Changes to courses: 

  1. The course BUSM4538 Management of Technology and Innovation is no longer a core course. If you have completed this course, it will be considered part of your Option Courses. 

  2. The course BUSM4164 Business Consulting is no longer a core course. If you have completed this course, it will be considered part of your Option Courses.  

  3. The course ECON1556 Business Data Analytics is no longer a core course. If you have completed ECON1556 Business Data Analytics prior to Semester 1 2024, it will be considered as part of your Option Courses.  

Please note, courses completed under previous transition arrangements will be considered Option Courses.

PROGRAM CHANGE FROM SEMESTER 2 2020 
 
From Semester 2, 2020, BUSM4164 Business Consulting will be listed as the final core course of the GD079 program structure. 
 

PROGRAM CHANGE FROM SEMESTER 1 2020 

All existing students will be transitioned to the new program structure, and all course credits that have already been obtained will be recognised in the new structure. 

The transition rules below will apply to students who have commenced the program prior to Semester 1 2020. 

BUSM4450 Business Research Design 
If you HAVE completed BUSM4450 Business Research Design prior to Semester 1 2020, you are NOT required to take ECON1556 Business Data Analytics as a core course. 
 
If you have completed BUSM4161 Managerial Finance or BUSM4532 Business Operations Management, please contact RMIT Connect for advice on your program enrolment.
