Top of pagePurpose of the Program
This program has been designed for you to develop and enhance professional translating and/or interpreting skills. It will develop your specialized knowledge of related theoretical approaches and industrial issues to prepare you to work as a professional translator and/or interpreter in both domestic and international contexts.
The program is designed to ensure you will critically engage with relevant professional and theoretical debates and develop skills in translating and interpreting. While acquiring this knowledge and skills you will learn to investigate emerging trends and apply these to your practice, including appropriate current technologies. This suite of skills and experience will underpin and inform your research and critical assessment of complex industry directions and issues, as well as the academic discipline. A capstone experience based on an individually negotiated professional practice project will enable you to work independently in a simulated environment and receive feedback from an experienced practitioner. This project will synthesize your knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes.
On completion of the program, you will automatically be eligible to access NAATI certification exam(s) for a translator and/or interpreter. If you are successful in the certification exam(s), you will be able to work as a translator and/or interpreter across diverse fields within the public service, including legal, health, business, security and international relations.
You will gain skills and knowledge in global contexts for research and life-long learning to enable you to confidently contribute to an industry that is always evolving. You will use innovative applications of communication technology to support translating and/or interpreting and practice and gain insight into your own practice. You will develop efficient work practices at high professional standards to allow you to plan, produce and deliver interpreting and translating projects.
In this program, classes may be delivered in an online and/or face to face format.

If you have already have experience as an accredited translator and/or interpreter you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning. You can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.
Upon completion of this program, you can continue your studies in MC214 Master in Translating and Interpreting and receive 96 credit points of exemption (equivalent to 1 year full-time study).
The Graduate Diploma in in Translating and Interpreting is also as an exit award of the Master in Translating and Interpreting if you have successfully completed the 96 credit points listed in that structure. If you wish to exit early with the Graduate Diploma you must have completed all 96 credit points.
The Graduate Certificate in Translating and Interpreting (GC185) is available as an exit award of this Graduate Diploma program if you have successfully completed the 48 credit points listed in that structure. If you wish to exit early with the Graduate Certificate you must have completed all 48 credit points.
Upon successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in in Translating and Interpreting, you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related Masters programs at RMIT University subject to each program’s entry requirements.

You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in any discipline.
If you have not completed an undergraduate degree, you may still be considered if you have at least five years of relevant work experience in interpreting or translating or in the use of bilingual language skills. If you wish for your work experience to be considered, you must submit a CV and a personal statement detailing your relevant work experience.
Domestic applicants only: You will be selected competitively for all languages based on your GPA, relevant experience and the results of any selection tasks you are required to complete.

Selection tasks (domestic and international)
You must submit a personal statement outlining:
- the language other than English (LOTE) you would like to study in the program
- if you want to study interpreting, translating or both streams?
- if you are applying to study the translation stream or both the interpreting and translation streams, what is your preferred translation directionality (LOTE into English or English into LOTE)? Please note only one direction can be studied in the program. We recommend that you translate into the language in which you are most proficient.
Selection tasks (domestic)
To meet the LOTE requirement, you must have completed a qualification equivalent to an AQF level 7 Bachelor degree that was taught and assessed in your nominated LOTE. If you do not meet this requirement you must complete the LOTE test.
Selection tasks (international)
If your bachelor degree is in English you must complete a LOTE test, which includes reading, writing and translating from your second language into your first language (one of them should be English). The program may also make arrangement for a brief interview if it deems necessary.
If your bachelor degree is in LOTE you must satisfy the English language requirements below.
If you do not have prior study or it was completed in languages other than English or not the LOTE you are seeking to study translating and/or interpreting with the program, you must complete a LOTE and English test.
English language requirement
You may meet the English requirements if you have completed an English proficiency test within the last two years, achieving:
- IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
- TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 79 (with minimum of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

External Accreditation
The Graduate Diploma in Translating and Interpreting (GD168) is endorsed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) http://www.naati.com.au/. NAATI is the national certification authority for translators and interpreters in Australia and provides RMIT (and other Australian tertiary institutes) endorsement in courses in T&I. NAATI also has an international reputation, certifying practitioners in off-shore testing programs in countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
By completing the Graduate Diploma in Translating and Interpreting, graduates will automatically be eligible to sit NAATI certification exams for interpreters and/or translators.

Industry Links
The program is endorsed by NAATI, which oversees industry standards in translating and interpreting in Australia. Highly experienced NAATI accredited translators and interpreters are employed to teach into the practical courses in the program.
The program has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) that consists of members from government agencies, service providers, industry representatives and practitioners. Part of the IAC's brief is to ensure that the program's links with industry standards and practice remain current.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
