The Graduate Diploma in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building program provides an intensive, multidisciplinary environment for the advanced study of the science, design technologies and management of sustainable buildings. As this field is positioned at the intersection of several disciplines, including building engineering, architecture, landscape architecture and design, this program advances the role of design research and innovative design practice in addressing critical issues associated with the sustainability of the built environment.
The program is especially designed for advanced professional development and/or specialisation for engineers, project managers, landscape architects and other design professionals working with the built environment.
Graduates may pursue many professional pathways, including work in private practice, state or local government, or in private practice as a consultant to building design or, property development projects.
This program emphasises the application of theoretical knowledge to practice and will build your capability to effectively respond to current and emerging issues, trends, and to client and organisational needs through your developed skills and knowledge.
In conjunction with the Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building, this program addresses the industry need for energy efficient and sustainable building specialists with a particular focus on developing your multidisciplinary understanding of the design, performance and development of sustainable buildings. The courses delivered within the program build your knowledge of the specialised domains within the field of energy efficient and sustainable building including sustainable building technologies, building physics and project management. You will develop the analytical and technical skills required to utilise theoretical knowledge and published data to inform your decision making as a manager and/or designer of sustainable buildings.
The program replicates industry and professional practice contexts and equips you to work in multidisciplinary teams involved in the development of sustainable design strategies and solutions for new and retrofitted buildings.
Successful completion of this program provides a pathway to further learning in the Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building.
Upon successful completion of this program you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.
Upon successful completion of this program you can continue your studies in MC209 Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building and receive 96 credit points of exemption (equivalent to 1-year full-time study).
This program is as an exit award of the Master of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building if you have successfully completed the 96 credit points listed in that structure. If you wish to exit early with the Graduate Diploma you must have completed all 96 credit points.
The Graduate Certificate in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building (GC163) is available as an exit award of the this program if you have successfully completed the 48 credit points listed in that structure. If you wish to exit early with the Graduate Certificate you must have completed all 48 credit points.
Upon successful completion of this program, you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University subject to each program’s entry requirements.

You must have successfully completed an Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) OR a minimum of 3 years significant work experience or professional practice related to energy efficiency, sustainability or building and construction.

Integrating industry expertise into the coursework is a key distinguishing aspect of this program. Adjunct and visiting staff from local and international practices are invited to participate as guest lecturers to ensure that you are exposed to the latest industry developments. Professionals in related industries such as building design, project management, urban planning, local and national government representatives as well as academic research partners provide you with exposure to current industry practice.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.
