Purpose of the Program

Program Purpose Statement

The Graduate Diploma in Project Management (Engineering) provides a post graduate level qualification that will build upon and develop project management expertise and knowledge for people pursuing a career in the field of project management within the engineering sector.  This program emphasises the application of theoretical knowledge to practice and will build your capability to effectively respond to current and emerging issues, trends, and to client and organisational needs through your developed specialised practice.

In conjunction with the Master of Project Management (Engineering) this program addresses the industry need for advanced and specialised project management expertise in the areas of project conceptualisation, scoping, design, development, implementation and evaluation. The courses delivered within the program build your knowledge of the specialised domains within project management, including project procurement, project development and risk management. You will develop the analytical and technical skills required to utilise theoretical knowledge and published data to inform your decision making as project manager.

The program replicates industry and professional practice contexts and equips you to work in multi-disciplinary teams involved in the management of programs and/or portfolios of projects. The RMIT Graduate Diploma of Project Management (Engineering) is designed to assist you in becoming a project manager who has the potential and knowledge to succeed within the dynamic engineering sector. 

Upon graduation you will be able to work as a project management professional and apply specialised knowledge acquired in the program with a focus on the engineering sector. You will be able to perform a broad range of roles that project management entails, ranging from the conceptualisation and planning stages, through to project completion and evaluation. You will be able to interpret issues, utilise your high-level information technology skills and strategy to address industry issues, and confidently provide expert project management advice and decision making.  You will be experienced in team-based and individually led project management. Upon graduation with a Graduate Diploma in Project Management you will be able to apply your capability and expertise to diverse organisations. 

The program has a strong emphasis on leadership and management including project scoping, scheduling, procurement, entrepreneurship, client relationships, financial and technology management and research. A blend of lectures and seminars with industry case studies and work relevant projects allows you to combine theory and practice in a real work environment. The program develops both your generic and discipline specific capabilities through the expansion of knowledge and ideas that align with the current and emerging expectations of employers and industry. 

Successful completion of this program provides a pathway to further learning into the Master of Project Management. Upon successful completion of this program you may also be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University.

The delivery of this program is blended comprising of face-to-face learning supplemented by online learning.

Articulation and pathways

Students who successfully complete this program may apply to continue their studies in MC210 Master of Project Management and will receive 96 credit points of exemption (equivalent to 1 year full-time study). 

This program is available as an exit award of MC210 Master of Project Management if you have successfully completed the 96 credit points listed in this structure.

The Graduate Certificate in Project Management is available as an exit award of this program if you have successfully completed the 48 credit points listed in this structure.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program.

Entrance requirements

You must have

  • successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification), or
  • a minimum of 5 years professional work experience in a related industry. Applicants with professional experience at a senior level that is less than 5 years may also be considered.

To have your professional experience considered you must include in your application a CV and a statement that details your experience.

English language requirement

A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

External accreditation and industry links

The Graduate Diploma in Project Management program and the School of Property Construction and Project Management maintain strong industry links both within Australia and globally. Integrating this industry expertise into the coursework is a key distinguishing aspect of this program.

The program regularly consults with an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) that consists of high-profile industry representatives. Part of the IAC’s brief is to ensure that that program’s links with industry standards and practices remain current.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
