Approach to learning and assessment

The program integrates a variety of learning and teaching approaches. The core of the program is the unique sequence of Bowen Street Press studios. The Bowen Street Press is a student-led, simulated publishing house. It is designed as a series of connected studios in which you take on specific industry challenges through collaborative learning and teaching strategies across the duration of the program. The studios are designed to operate in a vertical structure, whereby you will have the oppotunity to work with students from other year levels in the program. The studios will comprise a combination of intensive and weekly face-to-face seminars and student-directed learning.

You will learn how to constructively critique your own work and that of others. Peer review and self-assessment is integral to the learning environment and subsequently for professional practice within the writing and publishing industries.

Assessment involves ‘learning by doing’ and will include a range of activities such as writing and publishing projects, written reflection, research projects, portfolios, presentations, peer or industry review. Project proposals and presentations will be directly related to industry specific needs and may involve making contact with industry practitioners regarding contemporary issues.

The assessment you undertake will be designed so that your lecturer and/or peers can provide you with ongoing feedback on strengths and areas for improvement in your learning. This approach will enable you to improve on your performance during the program, as well as continue to refine capabilities for your future professional practice and learning after graduation.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;

The Bowen Street Press operates as a real-world, student-led publishing house which offers many opportunities for industry engagement and simulated work practice.

The integration of work-based learning and academic learning in this course will allow you to solve authentic workplace problems and/or address real issues faced in organisations. You will receive industry feedback on your work.
