Purpose of the Program

There is significant and continuing global growth in engineering and technology based enterprises, with a  concommitant demand for skilled engineering and technology oriented managers expected to grow 8 percent over the 2006-16 decade. Projected employment growth for engineering managers will be in line with growth in demand for the engineers and scientists they supervise and the industries in which they work.  This growth has provided the resources and increased the demand by graduate engineers to undertake postgraduate studies in order to enhance their future employability in increasingly competitive environments. 

The central objective of the program is to prepare you, as potential engineering managers and directors, for leadership roles in the management of engineering and technology-based organisations.  Accordingly, you will be expected to demonstrate that you can meet the increasing demands by industry, government and the community for knowledgeable, creative and responsible leadership. 

In order to achieve this, you will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the many facets of contemporary  management and the impact of new technology and technological change on engineering and technology based organizations.  You will be exposed to real-world issues, problems and opportunities in such areas as: risk and feasibility studies, managing innovation, developing systems thinking approaches, quality management, environmental management systems, strategic planning, economic environments, performance management, international issues and technology management.

Articulation and pathways

This program is offered at Masters, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate levels.  If you have completed Graduate Diploma of Engineering Management you can articulate to the final semester (full time) of this program.  If you have completed Graduate Certificate of Engineering Management program, you can articulate to the second semester (full time) of this program.

If you have a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma of other RMIT postgraduate programs, you will be considered for advanced standing for this program with course exemption to be considered on a case by case basis.

You may be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs for successfully completing this program upon application to other RMIT University programs. Please check with admissions officer of your program of choice.

Entrance requirements

You must be a graduate of an engineering discipline or equivalent science or applied science degree from either an Australian university or a recognised university elsewhere.  Graduates from other disciplines will also be considered if you have one year’s work experience in engineering projects or related industries.

If you do not have a formal first degree education background but have over 5 years of experience in engineering projects and related industries, you will be considered for special entry.  Application on this basis should be made directly to the Program Coordinator who will assess your application on a case-by-case basis, in accordance to prevailing RMIT policy supporting recognition of prior learning.

If you graduate from a university in a non-English speaking countries, you need to provide certification that your undergraduate program is taught in English language.  Other international non-English speaking students will need to have one of the following English levels:

  • IELTS (Academic) — 6.5+ (no band less than 6.0)
  • TOEFL Paper based — 580+ (TWE 4.5+)
  • TOEFL Computer based — 237+ (TWE 4.5+)
  • TOEFL Internet based (iBT) — Overall score 92, minimum 20 in all sections

External accreditation and industry links

There is no formal external accreditation available for Master of Engineering (Management) by coursework program.  However, to ensure the program meets the highest possible standards in postgraduate engineering education and that it satisfies the requirements of key external stakeholders, ongoing advice is provided by the Manufacturing and Materials Program Advisory Committee of the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.  The Program Advisory Committee has representation from manufacturing, automation systems, logistics and engineering companies and research centres.

In Australia, Engineers Australia is the national authority representing engineers in Australia.  Engineers Australia will recognise the achievements of members who satisfy the relevant leadership and management competency standards in the form of a new post-nominal Engineering Executive (EngExec).  The MEng(M) program is targeted at engineering and technology professionals who are pursuing a career path of engineering managers and directors.  You will be studying in a cross-disciplinary environment with participants in a wide variety of engineering and technology backgrounds.  You will be working in syndicate groups exploring the relationship of theory to experience and current industry practices.  The work-integrated learning approach adopted by this program enables you to acquire elements of the competencies required by Engineers Australia.  Graduates from this program are well placed to be considered for the Engineering Executive status.

A large proportion of the coursework in the program is delivered and assessed by senior industry managers and consultants who are currently actively engaged in industry, and are contracted by the University to bring into the classroom their expertise and currency of exposure to industry requirements.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
