Purpose of the Program

The Master of Information Technology program is unique in Australia for the breadth of study topics offered and the depth of specialisation available. It is designed for computer science graduates who want to study advanced postgraduate-level computing and gain exposure to world-class technologies.

In this program, you will address the theoretical underpinnings of new software technology and, at the same time, gain practical exposure to software tools. You will be prepared to think about the technologies that will be in use over the next 5 to 10 years, as you study a cluster of courses chosen from one of the School’s specialist areas of research:    

  • Bioinformatics
  • Databases
  • Intelligent Systems
  • Networked and Distributed Systems
  • Search Engines
  • Security in Computing
  • Software Engineering
  • Web-based Computing

Courses in these specialist areas are at the cutting edge of research and development. They are designed to allow you to explore the area thoroughly, while providing the knowledge and skills for true mastery.

In addition, you may choose to undertake elective courses or a research project in the area of your specialisation.

Entrance requirements

Local students

Academic requirement: Successful completion of a bachelor level degree in computer science or information technology, with a credit average (minimum 2.0 CGPA), or be a qualified IT professional with extensive relevant industry experience.

International Students

Academic requirement: Successful completion of a bachelor level degree in  computer science or information technology, equivalent to a similar degree offered in Australia, with a credit average (minimum 2.0 CGPA), or be a qualified IT professional with extensive relevant industry experience.

English Language requirement: English IELTS language test score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 or equivalent, such as TOEFL (Paper based) = 580+ (TWE 4.5+), or TOEFL (Computer based) = 237+ (TWE 4.5+) or REW English for Academic Purposes Advanced 1&2.

Gaining Credit and Exemptions:

RMIT University offers Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning to recognise the skills you may have gained through formal and informal education and training, work experience and/or life experience including volunteer work, committee responsibilities, family duties and hobbies.

External accreditation and industry links

This program is accredited at the professional level by the Australian Computer Society, which accredits Information and Communication Technology related programs that are offered by Australian universities, both onshore and offshore.

The School has a very strong Industry Advisory Committee, which is the main link between the program and industry. Membership includes staff from major IT companies with global and local presence.  The committee meets quarterly and provides feedback on the currency of our programs, the changing needs of Industry and has input into the design of new programs.  It also actively contributes to the School through participation in seminars, marketing events, industry awards and scholarships.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Resources available from the Library
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.

Online learning tools and content
As a student in this program you may access online learning tools and content for your program and associated courses from the student portal, myRMIT.

The School of Computer Science and Information Technology http://www.rmit.edu.au/compsci also provides you with access to its specialised computer laboratories both for use during scheduled classes and outside scheduled class times. These laboratories provide access to a range of computer environments including a variety of database products under different operating systems.
