Purpose of the Program

After completion of MC135, you will be able to work at a professional level in  OHS or, if you have completed the Major occupational hygiene, as an Occupational Hygienist. Graduates of this program are employed in a wide range of industries, usually in national and international companies or as consultants.

You will understand the OHS Body of Knowledge and be able to apply this in a range of organisational contexts. RMIT focuses on the science and technology of risk management through assessment of hazards and development of specific control mechanisms.

Specifically, the program includes:

  • the global concepts of health, safety and work, and the implications that these have in organisations
  • the socio-political and organisational context in which work occurs and how this impacts work design and its effects on the workers
  • the causes of fatalities, injuries and ill health arising from work
  • recognition of hazards, assessment of their risk and development of suitable controls

You will learn to apply these concepts in a range of contexts, allowing you to develop confidence and proficiency in your professional OHS or occupational hygiene practice. Many of your assessments will incorporate Work Integrated Learning (WIL) by focusing on OHS or occupational hygiene issues in your work situation.

The Masters in OHS provides an opportunity to engage in a substantial work based research project or to extend your knowledge base through courses in business management or occupational hygiene.

Articulation and pathways

 

If you have completed a Graduate Diploma from another university, you may be eligible for up to 48cp credit applied to the MC135. Please discuss the details with the Program Coordinator.

After completion of the MC135, Master of Occupational Health and Safety you may be eligible for acceptance into a Masters by Research or a PhD in Applied Science.

You may be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs after successful completion of this program. Please check with admissions officer of your program of choice.

Entrance requirements

You must have:

  • Successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification), or
  • Significant work experience or professional practice


To have your professional experience considered you must include in your application:

-a CV

-a personal statement that demonstrates your academic foundation for masters study. This may include:

  • details on how your professional experiences relate to the program
  • demonstration of critical thinking in personal and/or professional practice
  • communication and problem solving skills

External accreditation and industry links

The Graduate Diploma Occupational Health & Safety (GD052) and the Masters of OHS (MC135) are accredited by the the Australian Occupational Health & Safety Education Accreditation Board (AOHSEAB) www.ohseducationaccreditation.org.au. The Graduate Diploma of Occupational Health & Safety (GD052) is a nested program of the Master of Occupational Health & Safety (MC135).

The Masters of OHS (MC135) with Major in Occupational Hygiene is accredited by the Austrailian Institute of Occupational Hygiene (AIOH) See list of accredited courses at: https://www.aioh.org.au/education-training-careers/accredited-courses.

The Safety Institute of Australia www.sia.org.au, the body representing occupational health and safety (OHS) professionals and practitioners, recognises both the Graduate Diploma and the Master Occupational Health and Safety as meeting the educational requirements for Certified Professional Membership. Graduates are able to become a SIA Graduate Member, and with three years experience can become a Certified Generalist OHS Professional.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library and most areas of the campus.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.
