The learning and assessment approach used for MC135 at RMIT is designed to prepare you for professional practice. The general approach is to apply a risk mangement model to hazards in the workplace, allowing you to recognise the context, evaluate the risk, and generate solutions. You will use the model of OHS Professional Practice for problem solving which involves gathering information about the issue, diagnosing the issue, developing and implementing appropriate interventions, and evaluating their effectiveness, all the while communitating with relevant stakeholders.
The Masters program incorporates the Graduate Diploma in OHS, which is designed with three foundation courses (Introduction to WHS, Critical Thinking and Decsion Making for WHS and WHS Law), three hazard based courses (Hazards and Control 1, Ergonomics and Psychosocial Work Environment), and two capstone courses (WHS and the Organisation, and WHS Intervention Project). The Masters year allows you to incorporate further coursework by studying occupational hygiene or business management, or to persue a large OHS work-oriented research project.
The program is run face-to-face in block mode supported by real time virtual tutorials. Generally, each course is run during one week, from 0900 to 1700, before the beginning of the traditional academic semester, eg during mid Feb, and mid July. Online tutorials are usually held during one evening per fortnight per course.
Your learning experiences will include a broad mix of study modes, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, discussion groups, presentations and lab and field use of instrumentation. You may be required to work individually or in groups.
A number of assessment approaches are used in this program to develop your capabilities. These are specifically designed to focus on developing a deep understanding of the knowledge and skills required by the OHS and occupational hygiene professional. Assessment approaches include:
- report preparation
- individual and group presentations
- quizzes, tests and exams
- lab practical reports
- literature reviews and critical analysis of readings
- projects
- reflective journals
Support for your learning includes:
- All notes and information are provided to you ahead of the lecture on myRMIT (Blackboard on the RMIT Learning Hub). Additional reading material may also be provided.
- Case study information is provided for in-class discussion.
- Projects are often related to real organisations and provide the opportunity to apply your learning in real situations. You receive personal supervision on design and implementation of research projects.
- Access to video, lectures and slides on internet. As such, access to high speed broadband internet is essential.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program, for example, through prior post-graduate studies, you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional practice and work integrated learning (WIL). As a student enrolled in MC135 Masters OHS, you will:
- Undertake projects (PUBH1386 WHS Intervention Project and/or PUBH1404 Occupational Hygiene Project) which require you to assess and resolve issues in an actual workplace.
- Have the option of committing your third year to a larger research project in an organisation (BIOL2327 Research Project 1 and BIOL2328 Research Project 24).
- Receive feedback on your projects in the work context. This will provide you with a distinctive source of experience to assist your learning.

Program transition plan
The program will be discontinued at the end of Semester 1, 2024. Students that have not completed the program by this date will be transitioned into the new master’s program MC282. A careful review of your progress will be undertaken, and you will be provided with an individual study plan, containing the information below: -
-courses you have already completed in the Master, Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate
-courses you are currently enrolled in [results pending] in the Master, Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate
-courses, if any, you need to complete in the Master, Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate for you to graduate.
Please be assured that if you are undertaking a reduced load, are on Leave of Absence, have deferred your studies or have not satisfactorily completed some courses, you will not be disadvantaged as a result of this transition process. All individual circumstances will be considered and an individualised plan of study will be provided to you in line with University policies and procedures.
