Approach to learning and assessment

The teaching approach throughout this program engages you directly in active learning. Underpinning this approach is an emphasis on a range of design research methods and approaches, in particular that of Design Research understood as research conducted through the activity of designing.

Consideration is given to the fact that declarative knowledge, that is knowing-about things, and procedural knowledge, that is knowing how to do things, must be integrated in the learning process so that you can transform that knowledge in a way that allows you to function creatively and responsively as a landscape architect.

During this program, you will conduct landscape architectural research through specific design projects, and frame this research through relevant written and representational modes. Learning is pursued through design projects explored in a combination of studio and supervisory modes within an environment that empowers you to collaborate with staff, practitioners, scholars and other industry professionals. This supports you to take risks through the interrogation and critical testing of ideas in the pursuit of emergent design knowledge and skills. By so doing the program equips you to move successfully into the landscape architectural profession.

The majority of learning occurs in design studios – a student-centred, creative learning environment – where the teaching approach is one that fosters creative risk-taking through design research. Learning, and learning beyond the classroom, includes interactions with academic and technical support staff, exhibitions, study tours, events involving practitioners, and other avenues for engagement in scholarly debate.

Learning and teaching in this program makes a priority of linking curriculum closely with industry. You will engage consistently with practitioners and with emerging policy debates and directions, so that you graduate with a close understanding of contemporary industry and professional practice environments, domestically and internationally.

As a masters student you will be expected to be independent in your learning and development in order to become an agent of change within the profession. To prepare you for a leadership role within the landscape architecture profession, you will develop a fine-tuned ability to assess trends and direct resources, skills and knowledge to meet emerging challenges and expectations.

Our expectations are high and, through enacting a student-centred learning approach, we will support you in this program to meet those expectations.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;

and in addition:

  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated.

Across all aspects of the program you will engage consistently with Landscape Architectural practitioners and be exposed to types of experiences found in professional practice, including real or simulated practice environments, publications, presentations, consultations, workshops, conferences and design projects.
Practising Landscape Architects offer Design Studios in the Upper Pool studio stream each semester. Within these, you will explore contemporary issues in Landscape Architecture through live or simulated projects and develop a design response in a simulated practice environment. This environment includes assessment by a panel consisting of practitioners and industry professionals. In the final year you will undertake an independent project for within a simulated client environment.

The designated Work Integrated Learning course within the Masters of Landscape Architecture is: ARCH1374 LA Professional Practice.

You will be required to undertake ARCH1374 LA Professional Practice in the first year of the masters. This course provides you with a basic understanding of the professional operations of landscape architectural practice, including legal and administrative requirements. It will introduce the range of practice undertaken by qualified landscape architects and focus on requirements typical to most forms of practice, large or small, in public and private sectors.
