Purpose of the Program

The Master of Science (International Sports Technology) program aims to provide you with an in-depth understanding of scientific and engineering disciplines related to the holistic context of modern sports technology, such as mechanical, materials, manufacturing, aerospace, electrical, chemical, and biomedical engineering, sports science, business, textile technology, media studies and mathematics.

This program is specifically tailored for you to understand, and take the leadership in, the sports industry or sports organisations in a global context, or, more specifically the needs (from a broader health perspective), opportunities (in a broader innovation context), problems (from a sustainability point of view), product developments (from a holistic perspective), and the future (based on lateral thinking) of international sports industry and sports organisations.

The program prepares you directly for joining the global sports industry and international sports organisations, by exposing you to problem solving, product innovation and hands-on experience in various areas of sports technology. This distinguishes the Sports Technology Program from traditional undergraduate sports engineering courses, which are focussed on engineering theory and show the application to sports only by example.

The program structure will provide learning experiences for you to acquire and apply the critical knowledge of sports equipment design and development and concepts across core disciplines of sports technology

This program enables you to develop a skill set that spans multi- and interdisciplinarily from the theory of sports equipment in a broader context to cutting-edge applications and developments in sports technology, by providing the transdisciplinary perspective from associated areas such as biomechanics, sports analytics, sports management and marketing, and exertion games.

The program is purposely international in character as it aims to provide you with advanced technical and generic capabilities which will enhance your chances of employment in the global sports industry and sports organistions sector.

You have the option to undertake a double degree master program by studying one year at RMIT University and another year at a European partner organisation (e.g. University of Applied Sciences in Vienna; German Sports University in Cologne) and earn two Master degrees in Sports Technology. The master thesis will be written at the partner organisation.

The program requires in-person attendance, but also takes advantage of the capabilities of Canvas, the online learning management system that is available to all students and provides scope for collaboration and remote access. While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered online.

In this program you will undertake a capstone project in the 48 credit point course OENG1088 Master's Research Project (or the alternative of completing the two 24 credit point courses OENG1089 Master's Research Project Part 1 and OENG1090 Master's Research Project Part 2). In this project you will consolidate and expand the knowledge gained throughout the program through an in-depth experimental and/or analytical study of a highly technical and/or engineering management application.

Articulation and pathways

You will be able to exit the Master of Science (International Sports Technology) with the GD182 Graduate Diploma in International Sports Technology after successful completion of the first year (8 courses).

After successfully competing the Masters of Science (International Sports Technology) you may be eligible to apply to continue with your study and pursue a PhD, subject to entry requirements.

You may also be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs upon successfully completing this program. Please check with admissions officer of your program of choice. If you require further details on  programs refer to the RMIT University Handbook http://www.rmit.edu.au/handbook.

Dual Award

The Master of Science (International Sports Technology) program has a dual masters agreement with the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien in Vienna, Austria and German Sport University Cologne, in Cologne, Germany.

Five students per year have the opportunity to take part in each of the dual masters programs, and would qualify to receive a master's degrees from both RMIT and the partner institution.

Eligibility and selection criteria for admission into the dual award apply as follows:  

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled in the single award program MC190 Master of Science (International Sports Technology)
  • Selection: Academic merit (based on cumulative GPA)

Students who are interested in a dual master program should discuss with the MC190 Program Manager for further advice.

Formal application to the School will be due during your second semester, with the deadline for this to be communicated to you by the School.

International students who wish to transfer into the dual award must be aware of the impact on their student visa and post study work rights and should consider the following: 

  • Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE) will be cancelled while studying in Germany or Austria. This may affect your Australian student visa. 
  • During the second year of studies, whilst in Germany or Austria, students will be required to pay fees to RMIT in accordance with the RMIT fee schedules and deadlines.

University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien

Students that commence their studies at RMIT in MC190 Master of Science (International Sports Technology) and wish to complete their studies at UAS Technikum Wien in Vienna need to successfully complete the first 2 semesters of the RMIT program including the prescribed courses as detailed in the course mapping table below. Entrance requirements

A Bachelor, Master or Doctoral degree with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of equal to or greater than 2.0 out of 4.0 in one of the following qualifications recognised in Australia:

  • A Bachelor of Engineering, Master of Engineering or PhD in Engineering; or
  • A Bachelor of Science, or a Master of Science, or PhD in Science in the disciplines of Human Movement, Exercise and Sport Science, Physical Education, Sport Coaching, Physiotherapy, Disability, Nursing, Biology, Mathematics, pure sciences, applied sciences; or
  • A Bachelor of Science, or Medical Bachelor and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), or a Master of Science, or PhD in Medicine or Dentistry.

Relevant work experience in industry or sports organisations, or sports experience as an athlete or coach is also desirable but not compulsory. Applicants with a GPA equal to or greater than 0.5 but less than 2.0 out of 4.0 may be considered with two years’ work experience in industry or sports organisations as a sports scientist, or two years’ sports experience as a professional athlete or coach.

International qualifications are assessed for equivalence with the above Australian Qualifications Framework qualifications.

English Language Requirements

International applicants: A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

External Accreditation
The Master of Science (International Sports Technology) is not accredited, although it has been developed to align with the Engineers Australia accreditation framework. Engineers Australia is the professional body responsible for the accreditation of higher education programs that prepare students to practise as professional engineers. Graduates of the Master of Science (International Sports Technology) may be eligible to apply for membership of Engineers Australia. More details on membership of Engineers Australia can be found here.

Industry Links
The School Engineering is one of the founding members of the Australian Sports Technology Network, which fosters close collaboration between Australian sporting goods manufacturers and Australian academia specialised in sports technology. The School has substantial links with the sports industry, sporting goods manufacturers and sports organisations within Australia and internationally, including through research contracts. As well, students who participate in the RIIERP program spend the equivalent of one academic semester in a supervised, discipline-relevant industry position. Other connections with industry include the:

  • biennial Asia-Pacific Congress of Sports Technology (APCST) organised by the School of Engineering, which attracts the leading industrial, governing and academic stakeholders in international sports technology and engineering;
  • scholarly Sports Technology journal, with two Editors-in-Chief from the School of Engineering and an Editor-in-Chief from industry, and with Editorial Board members from industry, sports organisations and academia (www.tandf.co.uk/journals/rtec); and:
  • appointment of adjunct staff, invited on the basis of their industry achievements.

You will benefit from extensive sports industry research at the School of Engineering, by participating in various projects and by selecting a suitable topic for your Masters Research Project. Many the teaching staff within the program are practising (or have been) industry professionals with extensive industry experience and contact networks. This experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment.

Students and graduates of the program are eligible to apply to become a member of the International Sports Engineering Association (ISEA). Membership provides opportunities to network through biennial conferences.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
