Purpose of the Program

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) provides you the opportunity to acquire contemporary future-focused business knowledge and skills necessary to take up impactful leadership roles in an increasingly complex, digital and uncertain world. You will be empowered with the right expertise and mindsets to create a positive impact on society and drive business as a force for good. The curriculum is designed to help students become successful, thoughtful leaders and entrepreneurs who create value for their organisations and their communities.

This program has distinctive authentic, active and applied learning styles, and imbues knowledge and skills, which will enable you to manage and lead sustainable change within organisations and make impactful decisions in an unpredictable business environment. You will experience deep industry linked engagement for authentic and applied learning in designated industry connected work integrated learning (WIL) courses with opportunities to contribute to meaningful social impact.

As a future-focused business leader, the Master of Business Administration gives you a choice of majors, minors and options. You can choose on a spectrum from generalist (breadth) to specialist (depth) disciplinary knowledge for your learning. In breadth, your learning is organised in a way that provides a wide span of business discipline knowledge. If you choose more depth (by enrolling in a major or minor/s), you will focus on specific topics, which can be amplified and explored. Importantly, the Master of Business Administration also gives you the option to engage in interdisciplinary knowledge. This approach in the Master of Business Administration allows you to gain new perspectives. It recognises the diversity of business professions and that as a future-focused business leader, you are likely to extend your career beyond traditional business disciplines.

The Master of Business Administration includes key curriculum features to support your learning and attainment of graduate attributes:

· Core business administration fundamentals - The core curriculum includes design thinking, marketing, leadership, financial analytics, strategy, and the capstone course BUSM4163 Business Consulting. These courses provide you with the fundamental skills, knowledge and capability, to enable future-focused transformative change within contemporary business settings.

· Industry linked partnerships – Industry is embedded in the program throughout courses in various ways, including work integrated learning projects, mentoring, case studies, thought leadership, guest speakers and serious games, to ensure practice-based learning on real-world problems to optimise graduate attributes for career outcomes.

· Specialist knowhow - In addition to the core courses in the program, you have the option to complete a variety of courses including the option of undertaking a major or minor/s. Three majors and five minors are available in the program:

  • Majors include Digital Transformation, Leadership, and Human Resource Management.
  • Minors include Digital Transformation, Leadership, People Analytics, Digital Finance, and Sustainable Enterprise. 
  • Professional Placement and Research courses: offering internships and Higher Degree by Research pathways. 
  • Choose your own flexible learning journey: choose either one major, or two minors, or one minor and a spread of remaining option courses or University electives or choose your own combination of your preferred option courses and University electives.

· Capstone - The capstone course BUSM4163 Business Consulting will give you the opportunity to critically reflect on this program’s curriculum. The course promotes the integration and synthesis of the range of knowledge and skills you gained in the program and the application of these in discipline related industry linked scenarios guiding your work readiness. You will be guided by industry mentors.

· Research - The core research course of this program is BUSM3255 Strategy. This course is designed to develop your knowledge of research principles and methods and how to apply them in the context of strategy formation within the contemporary business environment. You will have the opportunity to conduct a research project/proposal and further develop your skills in research methodology.

The Master of Business Administration program provides you with a range of stimulating learning experiences, (authentic learning, activity-based learning and applied learning), which will allow you to apply management theories and concepts across a range of contemporary, transformative, and future-focused organisational contexts. You will be involved in a variety of learning activities, within a blended learning approach which include role plays, seminars, discussions, individual and team presentations, team activities, preparing business reports, preparing and presenting business consulting projects and reflecting how you will translate your learning experiences for impact in your current and future career contexts.

As a graduate of the Master of Business Administration you will have obtained many transferable knowledge and skills to equip you for leading and managing transformative change within organisations contexts.

  • Skills extend beyond simply enterprise and human skills, to also include:
  • Self awareness – values, motivators, interest, strengths, familiar and unfamiliar roles and industries of interest.

The delivery of this program is blended comprising of face-to-face and online learning.

The Master of Business Administration is a generalist post graduate degree which offers a pathway to success in business in a wide area of professional work in global contexts, whether you are a recent graduate with limited work experience, or an emerging manager or entrepreneur.

As a Master of Business Administration graduate, you can expect career opportunities within a wide cross section of industries and organisations, across private enterprise, management consulting, the public sector and the not-for-profit sector, to lead transformative change in response to the evolving nature of the economy, society and the environment, and their effect on business activity, decision making and investment.

Master of Business Administration students who focus on the application of knowledge across more than one area of study that provides a deep understanding of how businesses function, with a broader combination of courses through majors and minors, may pursue transformative roles. These deeper learnings include majors in Digitial Transformation, Leadership, Human Resource Management, and minors in Digital Finance, Sustainable Enterprise Digital Transformation, Leadership and People Analytics may pursue transformative roles.

Articulation and pathways

GC047 Graduate Certificate in Business Administration is an entry and exit point to MC199 Master of Business Administration. GD079 Graduate Diploma in Business Administration is an exit point only to MC199 Master of Business Administration.

The below arrangements have been developed in alignment with the RMIT University Credit Policy and related procedures.

1. If you have completed the equivalent of an Australian Bachelor degree* or higher-level qualification in business (or a related discipline), you will be exempt from completing the four (4) courses (48 credit points) below:

  • BUSM3169 Leadership and Management (12 credit points)
  • BUSM1534 Marketing for Managers (12 credit points)
  • Two (2) MBA Option Courses / University Electives (24 credit points)

You must complete an additional twelve (12) courses (144 credit points) to qualify for the degree.

2. If you have completed the equivalent of an Australian Bachelor degree* or higher-level qualification in any discipline and have the equivalent of two or more years in full-time work experience, you will be exempt from completing the four (4) courses (48 credit points) below:

  • BUSM3169 Leadership and Management (12 credit points)
  • BUSM1534 Marketing for Managers (12 credit points)
  • Two (2) MBA Option Courses / University Electives (24 credit points)

You must complete an additional twelve (12) courses (144 credit points) to qualify for the degree.

3. If you have completed the RMIT Graduate Certificate in Business Administration*, you will be exempt from completing the four (4) courses (48 credit points) below:

  • BUSM4534 Design Thinking for Business (12 credit points)
  • BUSM3169 Leadership and Management (12 credit points)
  • BUSM1534 Marketing for Managers (12 credit points)
  • BUSM4154 Financial Analytics for Managerial Decisions (12 credit points)

You must complete an additional twelve (12) courses (144 credit points) to qualify for the degree.

4. If you have completed any other cognate RMIT Graduate Certificate*, you will be exempt four (4) courses (48 credits points) which may count towards your MBA Options and/or University Electives, or the four (4) courses (48 credit points) below:

  • BUSM3169 Leadership and Management (12 credit points)
  • BUSM1534 Marketing for Managers (12 credit points)
  • Two (2) MBA Option Courses / University Electives (24 credit points)

You must complete an additional twelve (12) courses (144 credit points) to qualify for the degree.

Credit for prior study or experience

Credit outside of the above arrangements will be assessed consistently with the RMIT University credit policy and procedures. If you wish to apply for a credit transfer/ recognition of prior learning (RPL), please refer to Credit for prior study or experience. The Master of Business Administration does recognise prior experience based on meeting criteria aligned with these guidelines.

If no undergraduate qualification and you wish to apply under recognition of experience you will need to apply through the RMIT Graduate Certificate in Business Administration as a pathway program into the Master of Business Administration.

The Master of Business Administration is closely linked to industry. This takes place in various forms. In the core curriculum three courses are designated as ‘work integrated learning’ (WIL) courses involving discipline related industry projects as part of your authentic and applied industry partnered learning experiences. Other forms of industry partnered learning across the program form part of your authentic learning experience including case studies, guest speakers, thought leaders and mentors.

Guiding the development of the College of Business and Law, are Industry Advisory Committees of high-profile executives. The Graduate School of Business and Law has a dedicated Industry Advisory Committee for the Master of Business Administration. The role of the Industry Advisory Committee is to ensure the Graduate School of Business and Law’s links with industry standards and practices remain current. The Industry Advisory Committee also provides feedback on the currency of our programs, the changing needs of Industry and has input into the design of new programs. The committee represents diverse and contemporary industry perspectives.
