Purpose of the Program

The context of modern business is dynamic and the spheres of professional knowledge and skill are expanding. The Master of Business Information Technology seeks to produce graduates with the capabilities to operate confidently and effectively in a technological and global business environment. The program is designed to produce ethically and socially responsible professionals who have the potential and knowledge to create successful business information systems solutions drawing on their technical and leadership capabilities, effective communication skills, systems approach to business solutions, innovative professional practices, and strategic and organisational skills. At RMIT we are committed to providing you with those skills so that your capabilities in the workplace and your skill sets are not only useful in the local Australian context but are relevant and useable globally.

The Master program has a strong emphasis on providing a body of knowledge and experiences, through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops and seminars, which reflect the practicalities of the real world, especially concerning ICT management and e-business. Theory and practice are appropriately blended to allow you to appreciate and develop an understanding about practical and ICT-related issues in business. The program seeks to develop well-rounded and skilled graduates, who can apply sound thinking and judgment to the effective management of ICT and e-business environments, and who are able to operate in local and global contexts.

The program currently has a capstone project within the Business Information Technology Project course. In this course students may analyse, design, and build a business information systems solution under normal business conditions. The integration of work-based learning (part-time students) and /or Industry Engagement opportunities (full-time students where possible) avails students the opportunity to investigate/solve authentic business problems. Students experience the requirements elicitation, articulation and development cycle. In this course students also may practice project management skills, systems analysis and design skills, programming skills and information technology and networking skills to holistically experience a systems development process. Therefore, students are required to consolidate the knowledge and experience obtained throughout the MBIT program to successfully complete this project.

Applicants who have successfully completed any undergraduate degree (or equivalent) and are admitted into the program will receive advanced standing equivalent to four courses. See Articulation and Pathways for further information.
