Approach to learning and assessment

You will experience a range of teaching and learning approaches that are intended to develop and enhance your knowledge and skills, including seminars, lectures, workshops, tutorials, industry based presentations, problem-based learning, presentations, group-based learning, independent research, reflective learning techniques and case studies. You will also be required to demonstrate a range of verbal, written and internet based approaches of communication.

Assessment will be aligned to the course learning outcomes and program learning outcomes, and is designed to complement your learning experiences. Your knowledge and skills will be assessed through assessment tasks that may include essay writing, report and project writing, class presentations, group work, on-line discussion and other on-line activities, case studies, problem solving and analysis, industry-based assessment, and examinations.

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations; and in addition:
  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience may be simulated.

The specific WIL courses in this program in this program are:

  • LANG1221 Ethics and Professional Issues and LANG1231 Extended Professional Project.

In LANG1221 Ethics and Professional Issues, part of your assessment will include a simulated job assignment, for which you will receive feedback against industry standards by a practising translator or interpreter.

In LANG1231 Extended Professional Project, you will undertake a real or simulated professional project, building direct industry engagement and receiving professional feedback on your project work.

In LANG 1370, LANG 1371,LANG 1366, LANG 1367, LANG 1368 and LANG1369, you will undertake a real or simulated professional activities, building direct industry engagement and receiving professional feedback on your work.

Program transition plan

2025
The program structure for MC214 Master of Translating and Interpreting has been amended and the following change applied in Semester 2, 2025:

  • Course title change from SOCU2305 Language Management in Global Organisations to SOCU2305 Language in the Global Workplace

Current students who have completed the course under the previous name will not be required to repeat the course as a result of the title change.
If you are undertaking a reduced load, are on Leave of Absence (LOA), or have deferred studies, you will not be disadvantaged by this amendment.

2024

The program structure of MC214 Master of Translating and Interpreting has been amended and the following changes applied in semester 1, 2024.

  • The year 2 core course HUSO2079 Research Strategies – Social Sciences has been removed and replaced with an additional program option course in year 2. HUSO2079 Research Strategies – Social Sciences has been added to the list of program option courses available.

Active students who have completed this course will not be required to repeat the course or do an additional course as a result of the change. If you are undertaking a reduced load, are on Leave of Absence (LOA), or have deferred studies, you will not be disadvantaged by the change of program structure.

2020-2022

In semester 1 2020, MC214 introduced a variation of program structure in order to address new industry requirements introduced by NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Interpreters and Translators) 

The program changes were: 

  • the introduction of six new courses  
  • the conversion of a core LANG 1227 Translation and Technologies into an elective 
  • the offer of the two foundation core courses every semester (LANG1220 and LANG1219)  
  • the introduction of LANG 1237 Interpreting Accrediting Practice 1 and LANG 1222 Translation interpreting Practice 1 as cores, as well as electives 

From semester 1 2022, MC214 will introduce further variations to the program structure, the changes are:

  • the two foundation core courses noted in the variation from semester 1, 2020 (LANG1220 and LANG1219) will be changed to an offering every alternate semester
  • LANG 1237 Interpreting Accrediting Practice 1 is replaced by LANG 1269 Interpreting Certification Practice 1
  • program options LANG 1222 Translation Accrediting Practice 1 and LANG 1225 Translation Accrediting Practice 2 is replaced by LANG 1268 Translation Certification Practice
  • program options LANG 1368 Conference Interpreting and LANG 1366 Adv Conference Interpreting is replaced by LANG 1391 Conference Interpreting Practice
  • program options LANG 1367 Community Health Interpreting and LANG 1370 Police Interpreting is replaced by LANG 1388 Specialised Community Interpreting

Prior enrolments and results in completed courses are not affected by these changes. If you are currently enrolled in MC214 you can choose to finish your degree in the original configuration. You will not incur any extra costs or be required to complete extra credit points as a result of this change in program structure. 

If you are undertaking a reduced load, are on Leave of Absence, have deferred your studies or have not satisfactorily completed some courses, you will not be disadvantaged as a result of this transition process. All individual circumstances will be taken into account and an individualised plan of study will be provided to you in line with University policies and procedures.
