Purpose of the Program

The program has been designed for you to develop and enhance professional teaching and research skills and develop sound knowledge of theoretical approaches and issues in Secondary Education. This program will also enable you to teach in national and international contexts, subject to local registration requirements. You may also be able to work in non-traditional educational settings, private enterprise, government agencies and community service organisations.

You will critically engage with relevant professional and theoretical knowledge and skills in teaching, learning and education. While acquiring this knowledge and skills you will learn to investigate emerging theoretical trends as they apply to your teaching practice, including the latest technologies used in the field. This suite of skills and experiences will underpin and be informed by your research and critical assessment of complex education directions and issues.  A capstone experience based on a negotiated project will enable you to synthesize and integrate your knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes. 

On completion of the program you will be a professional practitioner with specialized knowledge of the education discipline.   You will be eligible to apply for teacher registration and teach in schools.   You will gain skills in global contexts for research and life-long learning to enable you to confidently contribute to the education sector. You will use innovative applications of communication technology to support your teaching practice. Through critical reflection you will work ethically and collaboratively with colleagues and external professional and community representatives.

Articulation and pathways

If you have successfully completed a recognised Australian  Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) or an equivalent overseas program you may receive 96 credit points (1 year full time) exemption.

Upon successful completion of this program you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT University subject to each program’s entry requirements.

Entrance requirements

Program entry requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Bachelor degree ,or equivalent), with a minimum of 65% average or a GPA 2.5 (out of 4.00) that includes a major in a specialist area and a sub-major in a second specialist area.

You will need to nominate your specialist areas of study upon application. Please refer to the VIT specialist area guidelines on the VIT website.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (academic module) overall band of 7.5, with individual band scores of 7.0 for reading, 7.0 for writing, 8.0 for listening and 8.0 for speaking.

CASPer Test

All applicants must sit the CASPer test. CASPer is a requirement for many of the initial teacher training courses in Victoria. Victorian Institute of Teaching language requirements

To register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), all applicants who did not complete their initial tertiary qualification in English at an approved institution in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States of America need an academic IELTS of 7.5 with no individual band score less than 7.0 with a score of 8.0 in speaking and listening.

Working with children check

Please note that to undertake Professional Experience courses in year one and year two of the program, you must provide a satisfactory working with children check. If you are not able to provide this, you will be unable to complete the program.

External accreditation and industry links

The Master of Teaching Practice (Secondary Education) is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching ( for registration purposes. In order to teach in Victoria, graduates must be registered with VIT. Successful completion of this program will allow you to apply for Provisonal Registration with VIT. To obtain Provisional Registration, graduates are required to complete a VIT Registration application form and submit it to the Institute. Further information on the registration process and requirements can
be found here. Graduates will have to check with the individual registration authorities in other States and Territories. You will also be able to apply for membership of appropriate professional bodies and will be advised of these during the program.

Literacy and numeracy test: In order to register provisionally with VIT, students will be required to pass a literacy and numeracy test prior to graduating from their program. This test is mandated by the Federal Government and is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Students are allowed a maximum of three attempts and must be successfully completed by the end of the first year of the program. For more information please see

Currently enrolled students: If you are currently enrolled in a VIT accredited program in Victoria and will complete your program in the second half of 2016 or later, you must pass the National Literacy and Numeracy for Initial Teacher Education Students Test in order to be eligible to apply for teacher registration. 

Students commencing from 2017: All new students commencing an accredited initial teacher education program will be required to undertake the test prior to graduation. The test must be passed by the end of the first year of enrolment in order to graduate from the program.

The program regularly consults with a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) that consists of high profile industry representatives. Part of the PAC’s brief is to ensure that the program's links with industry standards and practice remain current.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT ( or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library. Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service. The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it.
