Approach to learning and assessment

The program integrates a variety of learning and teaching approaches that take place through a combination of face-to-face classes, online materials and tutorial-style discussions, and ‘flipped’ (online) lectures. You will participate in a variety of learning activities including seminars, lectures, workshops, tutorials, collaborative group work, presentations, negotiated learning, peer review, and discussion. You can also expect to engage with case studies, problem-based learning, and reflective techniques such as blogs and journals, and participate in different methods of communication. You will learn how to constructively critique your own work and that of others. Peer review and self-assessment are critical to the learning environment and subsequent professional practice.

In addition to the designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course, several of the program option courses have a WIL component that will assist you to develop vocational knowledge, experience, and skills required for working in the criminal justice sector.

The project in your final semester will be a capstone experience designed as a culmination of your learning throughout the program.

Assessment

Assessments involve 'learning by doing' and will include a range of activities such as reports, essays and project writing, presentations, collaborative group work, portfolios, case studies, critical analysis, and peer review.

The assessment will be accompanied by ongoing feedback, from teaching staff and/or your peers, on strengths and areas for improvement in your learning. This approach will enable you to improve on your performance during the program, as well as continue to refine capabilities for your future professional practice and learning.

Equitable Learning Services

If you have a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition or are the primary carer of individuals with a disability it is possible to have adjustments arranged and negotiated to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Program Manager or the Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities; complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;

and in addition:

  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated in a workplace environment.

The specific WIL course in this program is:

  • JUST2312 Justice Research Project or
  • JUST2352 Justice Internship Project

The integration of work-based learning and academic learning will allow you to solve authentic workplace problems and address real issues faced in organisations. Group projects and/or industry placements will enhance and develop your knowledge and skills in a work context and you can expect to receive industry feedback on your scholarly investigation.
