Purpose of the Program

The Master of Design Innovation and Technology is designed for advanced professional development and/or specialisation for architects, landscape architects and other design professionals working with the built environment as well as candidates from other disciplinary backgrounds, such as science, computer science and engineering seeking to apply and extend their knowledge in the field of design for the built environment.

The principal objectives of the Master of Design Innovation and Technology program are to prepare you to be leaders in the rapidly changing design of a more responsive, human centred and sustainable built environment. One of the primary objectives is to speculate about the future of design practice in light of increasing environmental, social and economic change.

The Master of Design Innovation and Technology draws on SIAL’s existing research and higher degree by research programs. Information technology has already transformed design practice, but we are only at the beginning of a greater revolution in the integrated application of technology to workflow throughout the process of the design-to-production of the built environment. This program is designed to address these issues using a substantially studio-based model and will develop a collaborative work ethic between you and your collegues from many different disciplinary backgrounds.

During this program, you will be introduced to creative opportunities to enhance the quality of the built and virtual environments, streamline the design-to-production process, and reduce the carbon footprint of the future city. These involve the migration of technology and techniques between industries and designers with a broad understanding of the knowledge that needs to be integrated, You will also develop interest and ability to communicate around specialist knowledge outside your own discipline. 

The program will also provide you with an intensive, transdisciplinary environment for advanced studies in contemporary and future design practice and its relationship to performance and production in both the built and virtual environments.

Innovation in spatial and architectural design practice is positioned at the intersection of several disciplines, such as architecture and design, computer science, engineering and media and sound design. The program will advance the role of design research and innovation in your design practice through collaboration; preparing you to confront the many critical issues affecting the quality and performance of built and virtual environments.

Upon graduating with a Master of Design Innovation and Technology you will be able to pursue many professional pathways, including work in private practice, specialist consultancy to design practice or high-end construction and development. You will also be prepared for new enterprise serving the modeling of environmental performance as a driver in early design, the realisation of complex architecture, integration of technology in spatial design such as sound, sensing and actuation, and design of the virtual and sonic environments. You may also assume leadership positions within practice and find specialised roles in enterprise and consultancy.

A flexible program structure and combination of face-to-face and online delivery modes are designed to suit working professionals.

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit Programs of Design Innovation and Technology.

As design innovation and technology is a specialisation that may be practiced within other disciplines such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Industrial Design, Acoustic Design for instance, applicants with accredited degrees in these fields may already have or pursue professional registration through those institutes. 

Industry Links

The RMIT Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory (SIAL) has strong industry links to global leaders in architectural and engineering practice, technology companies and to fabricators, construction and industry bodies. Integrating this international industry expertise into the coursework is a key distinguishing aspect of this program.

The program regularly consults with a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) that consists of high profile industry representatives. Part of the PAC’s brief is to ensure that the program's links with industry standards and practice remain current.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services
