Purpose of the Program

The program objectives are: 

  • To develop your knowledge and skills in electrical engineering that will enhance your career prospects in the relevant industries including power transmission and distribution and electronics industry.
  • To facilitate learning of electrical engineering concepts and applications that are directly linked to industry needs.
  • To provide a pathway for graduates from other engineering and appropriate science degrees to articulate into electrical engineering.
  • To facilitate research and promote further research as a natural outcome of successfully completing the program. You would choose Research Project (EEET2312), or Research Project Parts 1 and 2 (EEET2313 and EEET2314), if you intend to proceed to a  Research degree on completion of this Masters degree (you should have a good academic performance in year 1 of this degree to take this option). If you intend to seek employment in industry on graduation then taking Professional Advanced Engineering Projects 1 and 2 (EEET2349 and EEET2350) is the best option. Please consult with the Program Director on choosing these options.

    The program provides a pathway for engineers and scientists, or those with an alternative acceptable qualification and relevant experience in industry, to gain a postgraduate qualification specializing in Electrical Engineering.

    Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Electrical Engineering or the Graduate Diploma in Electrical Engineering can articulate into this program with full credit.

    Opportunities also exist if you decide not to pursue the full Masters qualification. After completing 96 credit points you may choose to exit with the Graduate Diploma.

    Opportunities also exist for graduates of this Master’s program with good academic performance to undertake a PhD.

    Entrance requirements

    Program Entry Requirements

    An Australian bachelor degree with a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0 in engineering (computer, electronic, telecommunications, electrical, communication, or network), or equivalent; or

    An Australian bachelor degree with a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0 in physics (electromagnetic theory), or equivalent; or

    An Australian bachelor degree in any discipline with a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0 and at least five years work experience in the computer, electronic, telecommunications, electrical, communication or network engineering industry, or equivalent. Applicants applying on the basis of work experience are expected to have skills in analysis, design, and management within the  computer, electronic, telecommunications, electrical communication or network engineering industry.

    International qualifications are assessed according to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). 

    English language requirements 

    A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.  For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page

    External accreditation and industry links

    Engineers Australia is the national authority representing engineers in Australia. Under the Washington Accord, international recognition is offered by countries such as the USA, United Kingdom, Hong Kong (SAR), New Zealand, Ireland, Canada and South Africa. Engineers Australia is responsible for the accreditation of undergraduate engineering programs. Accreditation ensures academic institutions consistently meet national and international standards.

    The current policy of Engineers Australia is to admit engineering graduates based on their undergraduate program to membership at the relevant career grade, and allow reciprocal privileges by equivalent professional bodies overseas. In general, Engineers Australia does not accredit postgraduate programs (such as this one). However, you can be admitted to membership of Engineers Australia as:

    • A graduate from an accredited undergraduate program. The career grade and discipline will depend on your undergraduate degree; or
    • A graduate from a non-accredited degree and completing a competency report. The career grade and discipline will depend on your undergraduate degree; or
    • An experienced engineering professional. The career grade and discipline will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

    The school has extensive links with industry, particularly through research projects, consulting, and industry sponsored design projects. Examples of the collaborative links in the energy and control area include:

    • Powercor/Citipower and Jemena in ARC Linkage project led by Prof. Xinghuo Yu
    • Holden Innovative in Formula SAE Car Racing led by Prof. Liuping Wang
    • Futuris Australia in Final Year Student Project

    In a number of cases industry has provided direct support by donating laboratory equipment. One such example is:

      Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

      Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

      Resources available from the Library:
      As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library.       In addition, many academics have their notes printed for distribution to off-shore students.  These notes are also available from the RMIT Bookshop at a very affordable cost for local students.

      The school has many laboratories, many with specialised equipment in the area of machines, high voltage and power protection, to support the relevant teaching and learning activities, and most of these labs have been upgraded in recent years, to ensure that you have access to modern computers and equipment that you are likely to use in industry.
