Purpose of the Program

Analytics is an established quantitative field within both industry and higher education. With exponential growth in available data, the analytics discipline has emerged as a key field requiring the skilled analyst. This program provides you with complementary skills in analytics, tapping into studies in statistics, operations research, computer science, information technologies, business, economics, finance and marketing. Combining the expertise of the College of Science, Engineering and Health and the College of Business, the Master of Analytics prepares you for statistical analysis in the business world. The flexibility of the program, allowing you to choose from a diverse range of option courses, combined with a core of statistics and operations research, will enable you to specialise in the areas that will assist you in the future.

The program has a student-focused approach that aims at developing superior skill levels in the use of statistics and operations research in solving real world problems arising in industry, research and the business environments. This is achieved by the use of contemporary statistical software accompanied by an in-depth understanding of the statistical processes involved and how these processes impact in a variety of environments. By completing this program, you will be particularly knowledgeable, creative and critical in your approach to interpreting and analysing data. You will also be equipped with the ability to apply knowledge acquired to solve a wide range of real world problems.

A strong focus of the program is consulting and work-integrated learning. This assists you through exposure to industry projects and problems that provide you with hands on examples for the development of your analytic capabilities. With data-driven decisions now a fundamental part of business operations, this program provides you with the platform to be a business-ready problem solver.

MATH2191 Applied Research Project will serve as a capstone experience - a culmination of  prior knowledge, skills and their application acquired during the program of study. 

While most courses in the program are delivered on campus, others are delivered online.

Articulation and pathways

If you have successfully completed one of the following qualifications majoring in analytics, statistics, operations research, or a relevant discipline you will be eligible for exemptions as follows:

Pathways

For domestic students, the following exit awards are available:

  • GC173 Graduate Certificate in Data Science is available if you choose to exit the Master's program after 48 credit points. This excludes any courses awarded as advanced standing. 
  • GC170 Graduate Certificate in Analytics is available if you choose to exit the Master's program after 48 credit points. This excludes any courses awarded as advanced standing. 
  • GD111 Graduate Diploma in Analytics is available if you choose to exit the Master's program after 96 credit points. This excludes any courses awarded as advanced standing.

The capabilities developed by the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are consequently less comprehensive than those developed by the Master's program.

Note: these exit awards are not registered with CRICOS and therefore not available for international students

Upon completion of your program, if you wish to continue your studies with a PhD degree, you may need to have completed MATH1332 Minor Thesis.

    Graduates of the Master of Analytics program may be eligible to become a member of the Institute of Analytics Professional Australia, the Statistical Society of Australia, the American Statistical Association, the Australian Society For Operations Research and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

    The Institute of Analytics Professionals of Australia (IAPA) is the professional organisation for the analytics industry in Australia, incorporating business analytics and data mining across multiple disciplines and sectors. The objective of the Statistical Society of Australia (SSAI) is to further the study, application and good practice of statistical theory and methods in all branches of learning and enterprise. The primary objective of accreditation is to indicate to the non-statistical community that the holder has achieved an acceptable level of professional competence in the understanding and application of statistical methods and is bound by the Code of Conduct of the SSAI . The American Statistical Association is the world’s largest community of statisticians and supports excellence in the development, application and dissemination of statistical science through meetings, publications, membership services, education, accreditation and advocacy.

    The Australian Society For Operations Research serves the professional needs of Operation Research (OR) analysts, managers, students and educators by publishing a National Bulletin and National and Chapter Newsletters. The society also serves as a focal point for operations researchers to communicate with each other and to reach out to other professional societies. The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences is the leading association for professionals in the fields of operations research, management science, and analytics.

    We are formally linked to industry through our Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) and through various consulting and research projects undertaken by staff. Members of the IAC provide valuable input and are a major driver for change in the program, particularly with regard to industry trends and future graduate capabilities, the use of state-of-the-art software, and the introduction of specialisations.

    Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

    Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

    Library resources and services

    As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library.
