Approach to learning and assessment

Over the duration of your program you will experience a variety of teaching and learning approaches. The approaches used in each course will be appropriate to the learning outcomes and core capabilities they are designed to develop.

The major styles of teaching, learning and assessment you will experience throughout your program will include:

Classroom teaching: May include lectures, class presentations, group discussions, student-led discussions etc. This style of learning is designed to maximise your understanding of the curriculum content and develop appropriate skills. It is designed to provide an environment where you can ask questions and seek feedback as well as contribute to class discussion and apply theory to practice.

Flexible delivery: The program will incorporate use of online resources. These may include learning resources such as lecture notes, and assessment and feedback tools such as discussion boards.

Problem-Based Learning: Problem-based learning engages you in analytical thinking, research and provision of solutions.

Cooperative learning: Enables you to work in collaborative or team-based tasks.

Assignments and projects: These may be either research or problem based, and may be undertaken in teams or individually. They will provide you with experience at undertaking research and writing effectively to present your findings and recommendations to a range of audiences.

Formal examinations: Will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding and application of principles to either practical or theoretical issues.

Assessment

Depending on courses selected, student progress is assessed by a combination of group and individual assignments and examination. Over the duration of your program you will experience a variety of teaching and learning approaches. The approaches used in each course will be appropriate to the learning outcomes and core capabilities they are designed to develop.

The assessment you must complete is designed to provide you with opportunities to demonstrate the extent to which you have developed your capabilities and achieved specific learning outcomes in a given area. Methods of assessment will also vary with the learning outcomes and core capabilities of the relevant course but may include case studies, research projects and reports.

If you have a long-term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Equitable Learning Services (ELS) unit if you would like to find out more. Information about ELS can be found via the following link: www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services.

CPA Segment Examinations

Important Information

Students enrolled in the RMIT CPA Courses are subject to the following additional program rules:

  1.  Students must enrol in the CPA course and provide a copy of the enrolment confirmation via the online form before they will be permitted to enrol in the respective RMIT course. On confirmation of enrolment in the CPA course, admissions will activate the online enrolment function.
  2. The CPA examination is a hurdle assessment and students must pass the examination in addition to achieving 50 per cent or more for all assessment results combined to successfully complete the course. All six CPA examinations listed in the RMIT program structure must be passed as a condition for the award of the degree – MC260 Master of Professional Accounting (CPA Australia Extension).
  3. Students who fail the CPA examination must re-enrol in the failed CPA Australia course and provide a copy of the enrolment confirmation to MPA.CPA@rmit.edu.au. Once this has been received, the student grade for that RMIT course will be changed from Fail (NH) to Supplementary Examination state (SUP). The re-sit of the CPA examination must be completed in the next CPA examination session. Failure to advise the University of the re-enrolment in the CPA course with CPA Australia by the specified date will result in a Fail (NH) for the course.
  4. If the CPA examination is passed in the next examination sitting, the student will be awarded a Supplementary Pass (SP) for the course. If the CPA examination is failed in the second attempt, the student will be awarded a Fail (NH) for the course and have the following options:   a. Re-enrol in the course with RMIT and CPA Australia in the next semester and complete all assessment tasks (confirmation of enrolment with CPA Australia is required); or b. Apply for a program change into the MC194 Master of Professional Accounting.
  5. If the student defers their CPA examination, a copy of the deferral approval from CPA Australia is to be submitted to MPA.CPA@rmit.edu.au. In this instance, the student will be graded SUP for the semester and must complete the CPA examination at the next immediate offering. If successfully completed, the student will receive a Supplementary Pass (SP) grade. If a copy of the deferral approval from CPA Australia or fail the CPA examination, the student will receive a Fail (NH) grade for the RMIT course and their options are outlined in point 4.

  6. If a student fails the CPA examination for Ethics and Governance, Financial Reporting and/or  Strategic Management Accounting at the first attempt, the student is permitted to enrol in CPA Financial Risk Management (if Taxation Law and Practice successfully completed) and/or CPA Contemporary Business Issues (if Assurance and Forensic Accounting successfully completed) to maintain the required student load while re-enrolled in the failed course/s as per point 3.

Each of the six MPA (CPA Australia Extension) courses will include assessment components. CPA Program examinations will be held towards the end of the RMIT semester, and the results of each examination will be included as part of the student’s overall assessment in the corresponding MPA/CPA course.
