The learning and assessment approach used for MC282 at RMIT is designed to prepare you for professional practice. The general approach is to apply a risk management model to hazards in the workplace, allowing you to recognise the context, evaluate the risk, and generate solutions. This program allows you to complete a minor in one of: Occupational Hygiene; Human factors and Ergonomics; or, Construction Safety.
Several assessment approaches are used in this program to develop your capabilities. These are specifically designed to focus on developing a deep understanding of the knowledge and skills required by the OHS and occupational hygiene professional.
Assessments include:
- reports to industry standard
- individual and group presentations
- quizzes, tests and exams
- lab practical reports
- literature reviews and critical analysis of readings
- projects
- reflective journals
- case study and scenario analysis
Support for Your Learning
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. You will be directed to a range of texts, journal articles and other web-based material that provide a current understanding of the knowledge in this area. Lectures, voice files and other materials will be available on myRMIT (Canvas).

The nominated WIL course in this program is PUBH1386 Work Health and Safety Intervention Project. The integration of work-based learning and academic learning in this course will require you to assess and resolve issues in an actual workplace.
This program has strong engagement with industry. You will connect with industry experts and undertake projects and assessments with a strong industry focus.

Program transition plan
The program structure of MC282 Master of Occupational Health and Safety has been amended and the following changes applied in Semester 1, 2024:
- New course offering PUBH1404 Occupational Hygiene Project
- Course title changes in the Occupational Hygiene minor
- from PUBH1387 Monitoring and Control of Workplace Contaminants to PUBH1387 Occupational Hygiene 1
- from PUBH1359 Assessment and Control of Physical and Biological Hazards to PUBH1359 Occupational Hygiene 2
If you commenced the program prior to these changes, you will not be disadvantaged, and all approved courses undertaken previously will contribute toward your qualification. You will not be required to complete extra credit points or incur any extra costs because of these changes. Academic advice will be made available to you and an enrolment plan provided to you on request.
Current students who have completed courses under the previous name will not be required to repeat the course as a result of the title change.
If you are undertaking a reduced load, are on Leave of Absence (LOA), or have deferred studies, you will not be disadvantaged by the change of program structure.
