Purpose of the Program

The Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Mathematics & Statistics will:

  • give you basic knowledge and skills of mathematical and statistical theory
  • prepare you to pursue your studies in any domain of science that requires mathematical modelling and statistics
  • expose you to some mathematical and statistical models, programming environments, approaches and software
  • enable you to select and apply appropriate mathematical and statistical methodologies, techniques and software to some real problems
  • develop skills and abilities transferable in a professional context, including problem solving and analytical skills, communication skills, technology literacy, and the ability to work in a team and interact with others

The program is designed to build a solid basis of mathematical and statistical knowledge, and conceptual and analytical skills that are essential for further studies in science or engineering and are desirable in any professional environment requiring analytical and conceptual skills.  

This program is mostly delivered online; some courses may deliver practical, lab or tutorial activities on campus.

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Mathematics and Statistics are guaranteed entry into BP083 Bachelor of Science (Applied Mathematics & Statistics) and will receive 48 credit points.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 — a study score of at least 20 in one of Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics; and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page

External accreditation and industry links

This program is not accredited by any professional body. This program does not qualify graduates for any level of membership or registration for practice.

This program has strong links with industry through its Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) and through research and teaching collaborations. Many program teaching staff are from local industry or have extensive previous industry experience and well-developed contact networks, and many are currently engaged in industry-funded research projects. These attributes, when integrated into teaching and courseware development, ensure that your learning experience is industry-relevant.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
