In this course you will undertake vocational activities designed to develop vocational skills related to employment.

1. Identify vocational options

Performance Criteria:

1.1 List a range of vocational areas or occupations of interest in
consultation with a support person
1.2 Compare the requirements and conditions of employment for
the areas identified.
1.3 Take steps, in consultation with others, to identify own
learning needs in relation to vocational skills
1.4 Determine whether identified vocational jobs match interests,
abilities, physical and psychological needs and requirements
1.5 Select two or more vocational tasters


2. Prepare for vocational taster

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Gather initial information about the specific industry area of
the vocational taster
2.2 Identify various roles and responsibilities of self and others to
participate in the taster
2.3 Compare the extent to which personal interests and aptitudes match requirements of jobs of interest



3. Participate in vocational taster

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Carry out tasks in accordance with supervisor’s instructions
and work procedures
3.2 Use interpersonal and workplace communication skills
appropriately while working with others
3.3 Follow Occupational Health and Safety procedures
3.4 Select appropriate equipment and materials for the work tasks
3.5 Use equipment and materials safely according to instructions
3.6 Clean and store equipment and materials safely
3.7 Report any damaged equipment to supervisor

Details of Learning Activities

The Retail subject is designed to give you an introduction to the various kinds of work carried out in most retail businesses, including the skills required of any person who deals with customers in person and the other duties and tasks that are incorporated within the retail industry.

What is this taster about?

No matter where we work, there are skills we must have, there is knowledge we must quickly develop about our employer’s business and there are various tasks and duties that we must be able to understand and do.

You learn about:

• Major types of retailing
• Structure of the retail industry
• Methods of distribution of goods, e.g. from manufacturing to retail
• Major functions of retail organisations
• Career opportunities in the retail industry
• Employee’s responsibilities in the workplace
• Appearance and behaviour standards needed in the retail industry
• Identifying skills and personal attributes necessary to be successful in the retail industry
• Understanding the difference between internal and external customers

• Maintaining a welcoming customer environment
• Communicating with customers and other staff
• Working in a team
• Following routine instructions

A number of field trips are organized to help show us how and where retail functions as well as considering career opportunities in this industry.

Teaching Schedule

You will be provided with a comprehensive workshop schedule at your first class in February that will highlight the different days of the week and the classes that are scheduled for this course.
