Pre-requisites and Co-requisites

  • Reading and writing skills –literacy competence required to fulfill job roles in a safe manner as specified by the organization.
  • The level of skill may range from the ability to understand symbols used in OHS signs, to reading and interpreting requests for pathology specimens and completing appropriate documentation.
  • Literacy support available in the workplace may vary from having access to support or assistance from expert/mentor/supervisor, or to having communication supports available.
  • Literacy may be required in English or a community language, depending on client group. Use oral communication skills and language competence required to fulfill job roles in a safe manner as specified by the organization.
  • Assessors should look for skills in asking questions, providing clear information, listening to and understanding workplace instructions, and clarifying workplace instructions when necessary. Organizations may require competence in English or a community language, depending on client group.
  • Use numeracy skills that may range from the ability to complete basic arithmetic, calculations, weighing and measuring requirements to recording data.
  • Use problem solving skills required including ability to use available resources
  • Holistic assessment practice with other pathology units of competency is encouraged.

Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to follow procedures for collection of pathology specimens other than blood from clients and clients for pathology testing.

3.1 Explain procedure to client and obtain consent in accordance with legal and organization requirements.
3.2 Follow infection control guidelines

3.4 Use collection and clinical equipment safely
3.5 Follow organization guidelines for safe handling of pathology specimens/non pathology specimens.
3.6 Adopt standard and additional precautions and seek assistance as required.
3.7 Follow appropriate procedures for collection of sample
3.8 Follow OHS guidelines relating to disposal of equipment

4.6 Use of pathology collection manuals correctly
4.7 Select and prepare equipment and appropriate collection containers

Written short answer test on anatomy and physiology relevant to non-blood specimen collections

Participation and discussion on a range of study and practical placement (or workplace) issues and strategies to contribute to best practice

Performance of elements of competence ,clinical skills involving direct client care as designated for this unit to the required standard during one or more of the following:
- Simulated workplace scenarios
- On the job off-campus workplace/practical placement

1. Practical assessment on Teacher – led activities and student – centred activities including non-blood specimen collections.


2.Written short answer test on non-blood specimen collections including:
• Saliva
• Sputum
• Urine
• Semen
• Stool
• Swabs
• Skin scraping
• Breath
• Aspirates

3. Perform elements of competence as designated for this unit to the required standard during one or more of the following:
a. Simulated workplace scenarios
b. Workplace/Practical placement
