In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge required to load and operate drycleaning machines and process to specifications and quality requirements.

1 Prepare for dry cleaning

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Production schedule and work load priorities are correctly identified
1.2 Dry cleaning machine loads are accurately determined by counting, weight, volume or classification
1.3 Dry cleaning machines are operated in accordance with manufacturer and workplace procedures
1.4 Correct load size or weight is determined by accurately reading indicator scales
1.5 Dry cleaning schedules are followed for a given process or article
1.6 Dry cleaning machine operator instructions are correctly followed
1.7 Records are completed
1.8 Workplace procedures and instructions are read and interpreted


2 Operate dry cleaning machine

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Machine is loaded with correct weight for machine according to
garment classification, manufacturer specifications, workplace
procedures and OHS practices
2.2 Program is correctly selected for load type or classification
2.3 Additive dispensing is correctly selected and prepared for dosing system, where relevant
2.4 Machine is operated in accordance with operating instructions
2.5 Additives and dosing are monitored for correct operation and faults reported where appropriate
2.6 Machine operation and dry cleaning procedures are monitored
2.7 Garments are unloaded using correct manual handling techniques where required
2.8 Records are completed
2.9 Knowledge of machine operating processes are applied to
perform required tasks


3 Monitor machine operation

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Dry cleaning machine operation is checked for correct
3.2 Machine operational faults are reported


4 Sort and inspect articles

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Articles are hung or sorted and inspected for stains, further
work, etc. according to finishing requirements and standards of
the workplace
4.2 Garments are directed to correct area for finishing

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to prepare for dry cleaning, load and operate a dry cleaning machine, monitor machine operation and sort and inspect articles.

Details of Learning Activities

In general your training is contextualised according to the company’s production processes undertaken as a part of the trainee's normal work duties.

Your tasks are selected for training and explanation of the task to be undertaken is given by the trainer and the correct procedure discussed. The task is demonstrated by the trainer and underpinning skills and knowledge are developed.

When the trainer is confident you are capable of undertaking the task safely you will then do the task. During this time your work would be monitored by the trainer and questioning and further instruction given.

You will also be given workplace based tasks and activities to complete and practice between visits. Any activities and work performed between visits are reviewed and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Teaching Schedule

In general the course consists of 6 means within a workplace training context as follows:

1 Introduction and overview of course. Basics of skills required and course content 2 hours
2 Use of learning resources and basic skills development 2 hours
3 Workshops 6 hours
4 Complete manuals 4 hours
5 Supervised skill development to competency 54 hours
6 Consolidation of skills and assessment 2 hours

You will practice skills and understanding as a part of your workplace duties between sessions. Activities and work performed between visits are reviewed in the following session and further training is undertaken accordingly.
