Course Description

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge required to set up and operate weaving looms in a textile enterprise including set up for production changes and the conduct of sample runs.

1. Conduct sample run on new product and organise sample quality testing

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Loom is set up and operated in accordance with manufacturer and workplace instructions to produce a specified sample of a new design or product
1.2 Sample is produced and tested, or the test is organised, in accordance with workplace procedures to ensure required standards of quality are met
1.3 Test results are interpreted to determine adjustment requirements

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Product specifications are interpreted correctly in relation to loom setting requirements
2.2 Loom is set in accordance with product specifications, loom manufacturer instructions and workplace requirements
2.3 Loom is operated in accordance with manufacturer and workplace instructions to produce a specified sample
2.4 Loom is set to run at optimum quality and efficiency levels
2.5 Electronic process monitoring is set safely and to the correct functions if applicable

3.1 Loom started and stopped safely without creating faults
3.2 Loom is set to produce required quantity and quality of product
3.3 Weaving operators are instructed of any special operating requirements
3.4 Assistance is provided to loom operators as required

4.1 Adjustment changes are assessed in accordance with product and loom specifications
4.2 Loom specifications are changed and recorded to meet product requirements

Learning Outcomes


By the end of the course you will be able to conduct sample runs on new products and organize sample quality testing, set up weaving looms, supervise loom operations, readjust machine settings to meet requirements and maintain records.


Details of Learning Activities

In general your training is contextualised according to the company’s production processes undertaken as a part of the trainees normal work duties.

Your tasks are selected for training and explanation of the task to be undertaken is given by the trainer and the correct procedure discussed. The task is demonstrated by the trainer and underpinning skills and knowledge are developed.

When the trainer is confident you are capable of undertaking the task safely you will then do the task. During this time your work will be monitored by the trainer and questioning and further instruction given.

You will also be given workplace based tasks and activities to complete and practice between visits. Any activities and work performed between visits are reviewed and further training is undertaken accordingly.

RMIT University learning resources are used to support your training.


Teaching Schedule

In general you will be taught by 5 means within a workplace training context as follows:

1. Introduction and overview of course. Basics of skills required and course content 2 hours
2. Use of learning resources and basic skills development 2 hours
3. Complete manuals 4 hours
4. Supervised skill development to competency 20 hours 
5. Consolidation of skills and assessment 2 hours

You will practice skills and understanding as a part of your workplace duties between sessions. Activities and work performed between visits are reviewed in the following session and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be in the form of observation of your ability to conduct sample runs on new products and organize sample quality testing, set up weaving looms, supervise loom operations, readjust machine settings to meet requirements and maintain records. Also by questioning for underpinning knowledge.
