Course Description

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge required in the preparation, control and monitoring of continuous batch or tunnel washers.

1 Prepare for wash

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Type of continuous batch washer and operational requirements are correctly identified
1.2 Production schedule and work load priorities are determined
1.3 Laundry chemical requirements are identified according to wash classification
1.4 Washing program is selected according to wash classification
1.5 Correct water pH and temperature is determined
1.6 Machine is started-up correctly, and operator instructions are followed

2 Operate continuous batch washer

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Conveyor is loaded and weigh scale interpreted
2.2 Correct weight is achieved, according to product classification and machine manufacturers’ specification and OHS practices
2.3 Chemical dispensing is selected for chemical dosing system, where relevant
2.4 Conveyor is unloaded using appropriate manual handling techniques
2.5 Laundry is transferred to next area for extraction and spinning
2.6 Loading and unloading of washer is ensured to meet work load requirements

3 Monitor washing

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Inner cage is checked periodically to ensure optimum Dip level is maintained
3.2 Washer operation is monitored to ensure correct temperature and chemical levels are sustained
3.3 Operational faults are documented and reported

4 Finalise washing

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Final load is removed and completion of work load is confirmed
4.2 Washer is shut down correctly, or washing conditions changed to meet new load classification requirements
4.3 Work area is cleaned and all housekeeping requirements met
4.2 Records are completed


Learning Outcomes


By the end of the course you will be able to prepare the wash, operate continuous batch washer, monitor and finalise washing.


Details of Learning Activities

In general your training is contextualised according to the company’s production processes undertaken as a part of the trainees normal work duties.

Your tasks are selected for training and explanation of the task to be undertaken is given by the trainer and the correct procedure discussed. The task is demonstrated by the trainer and underpinning skills and knowledge are developed.

When the trainer is confident you are capable of undertaking the task safely you will then do the task. During this time your work would be monitored by the trainer and questioning and further instruction given.

You will also be given workplace based tasks and activities to complete and practice between visits. Any activities and work performed between visits are reviewed and further training is undertaken accordingly.

RMIT University learning resources are used to support your training.


Teaching Schedule

In general you will be taught by 5 means within a workplace training context as follows:

1. Introduction and overview of course. Basics of skills required and course content 2 hours
2. Use of learning resources and basic skills development 2 hours
3. Complete manuals 4 hours
4. Supervised skill development to competency 50 hours
5. Consolidation of skills and assessment 2 hours

You will practice skills and understanding as a part of your workplace duties between sessions. Activities and work performed between visits are reviewed in the following session and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Assessment will be in the form of observation of your ability to prepare the wash, operate continuous batch washer, monitor and finalise washing.Also by questioning for underpinning knowledge.

You will be assessed by observation as you identify washing operations, operate continuous batch washer, monitor and finalise washing (you can check the performance criteria above for more setials of these skills). You will be questioned for underpinning knowledge for all these operations.
